Barney Hammond

Barney Hammond is an international voice and acting coach who has been associated with the Stratford Shakespeare Festival and Shaw Festival Theatres of Canada, Shakespeare Theatre Company, Washington D.C. and with professional actor training conservatories of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and National Theatre School of Canada.
 
Recent achievements of his former students include Paul Whitty in the cast of the hit musical Once, winner of eight Tony Awards; Bill English, the lead in the Broadway musical, Anything Goes; actor Lucas Hall in the leading role of Beyond the Horizon at New York's Irish Repertory Theatre; actress Missi Pyle as "Constance" in the much acclaimed film The Artist; playwright J. T. Rogers American premiere of his play Blood and Gifts at Lincoln Center Theatre, New York; Lauren Ward, leading actress in the role of "Miss Honey" in the Royal Shakespeare Company's Matilda The Musical in London's West End; director John Langs production of the musical The Shaggs at Playwrights Horizon, New York, and Preston Lane, Founding Artistic Director of regional theatre Triad Stage of North Carolina.
 
Other former student achievements include the 2010 Off Broadway Best Actor Obie Award winner Marc Damon Johnson, The Brother/Sister Plays and recently on Broadway actors that Hammond has taught have appeared in productions of Top Girls, The 39 Steps, Boeing, Boeing, and Equus.

His students from Richardson and Abilene High School took state UIL One Act Play Honors for productions of The Long Christmas Dinner, The Comedy of Errors, and Merton of the Movies in class 5A competition.
 
He is a specialist in acting Shakespeare and other classical texts. His students have been members of such theatre companies as the Royal National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company, Stratford and Shaw Festivals of Canada, Lincoln Center Theatre, Shakespeare Theatre Company, Washington DC, Old Globe Theatre, San Diego, Theatre For A New Audience, New York, Guthrie Theatre, and Seattle Shakespeare Company.
 
Barney Hammond has also coached and taught students at Old Globe Theatre, San Diego, London's Central School of Speech and Drama and Guildhall School of Speech and Drama, and the Moscow Art Theatre School.
 
He has coached productions by such leading directors as Joe Dowling, Gerald Freedman, Michael Langham, Brain Bedford, William Gaskill, Barry Kyle, Nicholas Martin, David Esbjornson, Christopher Newton, David William, Michael Kahn, and Richard Monette.
 
He trained as a voice coach at London's Central School of Speech and Drama and Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
 
As a director, he has staged over 50 plays and musicals including:  A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Comedy of Errors, The Rainmaker, The Boy Friend, The Matchmaker, The Rope Dancers, Our Town, Anything Goes, Crimes of the Heart, Bells are Ringing, Girl Crazy, Babes in Arms, Godspell, A Cry of Players, The Imaginary Invalid, The Long Christmas Dinner, Summer and Smoke, Charley's Aunt, The Good Doctor, and Story Theater.
 
He trained as a director with Joseph Anthony, William Ball, Alan Schneider, Zelda Fichandler,Joseph Chaikin, Edwin Sherin, Adrian Hall, and William Gaskill.
 
Barney Hammond grew up in Houston where he studied with Cecil Pickett at Bellaire High School and Nina Vance at Alley Theatre.  In addition he attended Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh where he trained as an actor.
