Allison Lowery is the wig and makeup specialist for Texas Performing Arts. She has been teaching courses in wigs and makeup since 2005. She co-authored the textbook Wig Making and Styling: A Complete Guide for Theatre and Film with Martha Ruskai. Lowery is hard at work on her next publication, a two volume set of books about historical wig styling, due out in 2013.
Lowery received her undergraduate degree in theatre from the College of William and Mary in 1996 and received her M.F.A. in wig and makeup design from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in 1999. Among her many jobs, she was a wig maker for the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Wig Master for American Players Theatre and for the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, and created wigs and makeup for the Utah Shakespeare Festival, the Sarasota Opera, the Atlanta Opera, Piedmont Opera Theatre, and Glimmerglass Opera. Locally, Lowery has designed wigs for ZACH Theatre, TexArts, the Zilker Park summer musical, St. Edward's University, Texas State University, and Austin Shakespeare. She also works with many local photographers on projects. She is a member of USITT.
When not doing something with wigs and makeup, Lowery can often be found wearing a ridiculous outfit and screaming her head off at Texas Roller Derby banked track roller derby.
