B.F.A. in Dance: Dance Studies Option
The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance: Dance Studies Option leads to Texas state teacher certification for grades 8-12. Beyond a solid base of knowledge and technical proficiency in dance, the preparation for dance educator certification requires a systematic inquiry into the pedagogies and processes that facilitate learning movement, dance making and literacy as well as history and legacy. Our dance certification program is grounded in the praxis of educational theory and best practices in teaching dance, and is designed to enhance the teaching and learning experiences for both instructors and students.
The Texas state certification standards require specific coursework and examinations not stipulated in this degree program. A student pursuing teacher certification must carefully select courses to meet the certification standards and must fulfill all of the additional requirements for admission to candidacy and certification (e.g. course prerequisites, grade-point average requirements, examinations).
The B.F.A. in Dance: Dance Studies Option is balanced as follows: basic education requirement of forty-two (42) semester hours, and writing flags; Theatre and Dance core consisting of fifteen (15) semester hours; dance major requirements forty-three (47) and dance emphasis twenty-two (21) semester hours. The professional development sequence leading to certification is a total of twenty-four (24) semester hours and includes a semester of observation and a semester of practicum - student teaching.
In addition to applying for admission, students who wish to pursue the B.F.A. in Dance: Dance Studies Option must participate in an audition and be approved for the program by the dance education coordinator.
