Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance offers intensive, professional training within a rigorous academic setting. Students train in daily technique classes in ballet and contemporary dance forms, while also enjoying a curriculum that consists of practical and theoretical studies in performance, choreography, pedagogy, and related dance studies (dance history, experiential anatomy, somatics, cultural dance forms). Students perform and participate regularly in the department’s award-winning dance company, Dance Repertory Theatre. In every aspect, our students work with internationally recognized guest artists and scholars at one of the nation’s top research universities. The University of Texas at Austin is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Dance. NASD contact information is available upon request.

B.F.A. in Dance students may also pursue the Dance Studies Option with an emphasis in dance education, leading to teacher certification for grades 8-12 for the State of Texas.

Important Information and Deadlines

Freshmen Applicants

Freshman applicants must register to attend an audition no later than November 20 or three business days before their intended audition. Online auditions are due by December 1.

While you may schedule your audition any time after August 1, we ask that you submit your ApplyTexas Application before attending an audition or submitting an online audition. It is critical that you complete your application, along with submitting all supporting documents and forms on time. The ApplyTexas application deadline is December 1. Applicants may check the status of their application materials at MyStatus.

Applicants who have applied to the B.F.A. in Dance may also be considered for the B.A. in Theatre and Dance only if they indicate this as a preference in the Department of Theatre and Dance Application. Applicants should NOT list the B.A. in Theatre and Dance as a second-choice major on ApplyTexas.

Transfer Applicants

Transfer applicants should keep in mind that on-campus auditions take place only in November. Applicants who wish to audition in person must complete the Department Application to register to attend an audition no later than November 20 or three business days before their intended audition. Online auditions are due by December 1.

Depending on the amount of coursework you have completed in dance and the transferability of that coursework from another institution, a transfer student may find a timelier path to degree completion with the B.A. in Theatre and Dance, rather than the rigid structure of the B.F.A. in Dance. If you would like to be considered for both, please indicate that on your Department Application. Please do NOT select the B.A. in Theatre and Dance as your second-choice major on ApplyTexas.

Current Students at UT Austin

Current UT Austin students majoring in the Department of Theatre and Dance should speak with Mark-Anthony Zuniga, Academic Advisor, to inquire about switching to the B.F.A. in Dance. Students must then audition for approval to major in the B.F.A. in Dance at the class placement auditions at the start of each semester. Current students majoring in the department do not need to complete the Department Application.

Current UT Austin students majoring in other programs, departments, or colleges who wish to change their major to the B.F.A. in Dance are welcome to attend class placement auditions at the start of each semester. Faculty evaluation and space availability will determine whether a student can enroll in restricted dance courses. Only students who have completed courses applicable to the B.F.A. in Dance degree will be considered for a change of major. Applicants should make an appointment with the department’s academic advisor, as well as with Dance faculty David Justin or Lyn Wiltshire before applying. Application for Change of Major (Available Feb. 1) and artistic resume are due no later than March 1. Only applicants with fewer than 40 UT Austin credit hours, who demonstrate a timely path to degree completion, will be considered.
