Summary: This is a story based on true events of 1985 Poland. The hopeless atmosphere in which a displaced and discredited former teacher must raise his sons leads the boys to drastic measures. The poverty in which they must live as well as the oppressive environment which robs them of freedoms and seems to slowly debilitate their once outspoken and independent father pushes them to form plans to escape from Poland. With an ingenuity that is far beyond their years they plan and execute an escape which leads them
to Denmark and into what becomes a painful effort to achieve two noble, but incompatible goals: the greater security and happiness of their parents and their own greater happiness and freedom.

Summary: Members of an elite security force find themselves displaced into highly comparable positions in post-communist society. As a commission looks into past activities, the group as a whole cooperates in burning incriminating files. In connection with these activities one of the group is dismissed while the others are relegated to regular police work which includes none of the benefits or prestige of their former positions. While the dismissed officer turns to a criminal acquaintance for employment, the other officers (including protagonist Lt. Franz Maurer) are assigned to much more dangerous work than that to which they are accustomed. Their inexperience and lack of preparation for such work leads to a disastrous encounter with a ruthless criminal entrepreneur, the new colleague of the dismissed officer (Olo) . Ignorant of his friend's new connections, Franz is unknowingly drawn into the ongoing and complicated affairs of these people. As he realizes the situation into which he has been drawn, and the extent to which his friend is involved, his disillusionment peaks, driving him to take control of matters in his own way. This film includes violence, action, and suspense generally associated with western, especially American film. However it also addresses the issues of individual adaptation in a post-communist society. In this case it is particularly interesting to note the adjustments that must be made by one for whom the closed society offered a position of prestige and comfort which disappears as the society "evolves".

Summary: Director Bernarz is chosen by the government to oversee the construction and operation of a large new factory complex to revitalize a town he and his wife left twenty years earlier under such disagreeable circumstances that Bernarz's wife refuses to return with him. As the complex begins to materialize, the amenities promised the town's citizens in recompense for the destruction of their previously quiet, although financially hard-pressed existence, fail to appear. As disquiet begins to erupt in the town, Bernarz finds himself blamed by the authorities for the public disruptions and accused by the citizens for failing to keep his word. Meanwhile, Bernarz is battling reduced budgets, unrealistic projections, and his own inflexible nature, as least partially forged by his past actions in the town, which he attempts to keep hidden. As his family and his career begin to fall apart, issues of state vs personal responsibility, devotion to ideological vs personal dreams, commitment to individuals vs commitment to society as a whole, and present needs vs past actions all interweave in an provocative manner that invites interpretations that range from the film as an indictment of the communist system to a study of one individual's guilt in failing to carry out a difficult social responsibility.
