SELECTION PROCESS Harrington Graduate Fellows are chosen based on their scholastic records, character and personal qualities, commitment to pursuing a graduate degree in a designated area of study, and potential to become outstanding scholars and citizens. Nominees are reviewed by the Harrington Board, which is appointed by the President of The University of Texas at Austin. The Board is composed of UT faculty and administrators, including the Executive Vice President and Provost, the Vice President for Research, and the Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies, as well as individuals from outside the University who are internationally recognized for their contributions to education. The final selection and appointment of the Harrington Graduate Fellows is made by the President of the University. Correspondence with Fellows, arrangements for stipends, annual reviews of the Fellows’ progress, and other administrative duties are handled by the Office of the Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies. Incoming students who wish to be considered for Harrington Graduate Fellowships should contact their program’s Graduate Adviser or visit their program’s web site to see if there is a special deadline for application. All programs must have completed their review of Harrington prospects by February 1, so even if no deadline is posted by the program, applications should be submitted early to receive full consideration. All Harrington Graduate Fellows are appointed for 12 months. Beginning in September 2007, Fellows will receive a stipend of $35,000 plus full tuition and required fees, a stipend to obtain medical insurance, and an allowance of $2,000 for travel, equipment, books, or other professional expenses. Summer enrollment for three credit hours is required. As in the Fall and Spring, the Fellow’s tuition and fees for this enrollment will be paid. Harrington Graduate Fellows may not simultaneously hold any other fellowship or scholarship awarded by the University. They may, however, hold work appointments at UT. Harrington Dissertation Fellows –for currently enrolled UT graduate students The Harrington Dissertation Fellowship is a one-year award. To be eligible for a Harrington Dissertation Fellowship, a student must be currently enrolled at The University of Texas at Austin and must be a candidate for a doctoral degree—Ph.D., Ed.D., or DMA. Students who satisfy these conditions, and who are nominated by their programs for Continuing University Fellowships, will be considered for Harrington Dissertation Fellowships. Harrington Doctoral Fellows – for incoming graduate students The Harrington Doctoral Fellowship may be a one-, two-, or three-year award. Each year the new Harrington Doctoral Fellows will be chosen from among the successful applicants to programs leading to a doctoral degree--Ph.D., Ed.D., or DMA--at The University of Texas at Austin. To be eligible, a student must not be a current graduate student at The University of Texas at Austin (undergraduates at The University of Texas at Austin are eligible). Students who already have Master's degrees from other universities are eligible. A Harrington Doctoral Fellow can earn a Master's Degree in the process of completing the doctoral work. Harrington Master's Fellows –for incoming graduate students The Harrington Master’s Fellowship may be a one- or two-year award. Each year the new Harrington Master's Fellows will be chosen from among the successful applicants to programs leading to professional or terminal master's degrees--for example, the MFA, MSSW, or MSLIS--at The University of Texas at Austin. To be eligible, a student must not be a current graduate student at The University of Texas at Austin (undergraduates at The University of Texas at Austin are eligible).
