The University of Texas at Austin - Exemplary Service Award

Managers and supervisors have a new way to recognize staff members’ truly exemplary performance!

The Award

Up to thirty-two (32) hours of administrative leave per fiscal year can be awarded to an eligible employee who performs specific services or activities that demonstrate truly exemplary performance. The award shall be made in no less than eight (8) hour increments, except awards to part-time employees, which shall be proportional to their appointments.

Nomination for the Award

A manager or supervisor may nominate an eligible staff member from their work unit for the award. The manager or supervisor submits the nomination on the Exemplary Service Award nomination form and attaches the most recent performance evaluation.

To be eligible for nomination, a staff member must have been employed by the University for at least twelve (12) continuous months prior to being nominated for the award. The award is not available to faculty, teaching assistants, assistant instructors or to students employed in positions that require student status as a condition of employment.

To be nominated, an employee must have performed specific services or activities that demonstrate truly exemplary performance that far exceeds the expectations for the position.

It is important that supervisors not communicate the award nomination to the employee until approval of the award has been communicated by Human Resource Services.

Review and Approval for the Award

Nominations by managers or supervisors are reviewed by their department/unit heads and the Associate Vice President for Human Resources. The President gives final approval for the award. Human Resource Services communicates the final decision to the department/unit head. The departmental timekeeper then adds the awarded Exemplary Service hours to the employee's leave balances. Information and assistance with tracking exemplary service is available by contacting the HRS Leave Management office.
