Retirement Programs

The State of Texas offers two retirement programs for employees of public institutions of higher education.

  • Teacher Retirement System of Texas—All benefits-eligible employees, excluding graduate students, are automatically enrolled in this program beginning on the first day of eligible employment.
  • Optional Retirement Program—Certain full-time employees, based upon their position, may choose this program instead of TRS.

Contributions to both programs are pre-tax contributions through payroll deduction. Here are the current contribution rates:

*ORP participants who enrolled in ORP as of August 31, 1995 are grandfathered with 8.5% employer matching.

Voluntary Retirement Programs

The university offers the following two voluntary programs to help you save additional income for retirement.

  • UTSaver TSA 403(b)—This program allows you to save additional income for retirement through Traditional (pre-tax) or Roth (after-tax) contributions.
  • UTSaver DCP 457(b)—This program allows you to save additional income for retirement through pre-tax contributions, reducing your taxable income.
