Retirement Programs
The State of Texas offers two retirement programs for employees of public institutions of higher education.
- Teacher Retirement System of Texas—All benefits-eligible employees, excluding graduate students, are automatically enrolled in this program beginning on the first day of eligible employment.
- Optional Retirement Program—Certain full-time employees, based upon their position, may choose this program instead of TRS.
Contributions to both programs are pre-tax contributions through payroll deduction. Here are the current contribution rates:
| Program | From Employee | From Employer |
|---|---|---|
| TRS | 6.4% | 6.58% |
| ORP | 6.65% | 8%* |
*ORP participants who enrolled in ORP as of August 31, 1995 are grandfathered with 8.5% employer matching.
Voluntary Retirement Programs
The university offers the following two voluntary programs to help you save additional income for retirement.
- UTSaver TSA 403(b)—This program allows you to save additional income for retirement through Traditional (pre-tax) or Roth (after-tax) contributions.
- UTSaver DCP 457(b)—This program allows you to save additional income for retirement through pre-tax contributions, reducing your taxable income.
