EAP Staff Biographies
Connie Deutsch, Ph.D., CEAP, Psychologist & Director
Connie Deutsch is a licensed psychologist who has worked in clinical/counseling psychology for over 30 years, including 16 years managing her own private practice for psychotherapy with individuals, couples, and groups. Other previous work settings include psychiatric and chemical dependency inpatient treatment, as well as outpatient therapy and counseling. She has also served as a diagnostic consultant and expert witness; director of the Capital Area Mental Health Center; consultant for an independent research review board; and psychology instructor. Her specialties are depression and severe mental and emotional disorders. Her EAP presentation topics include Threat and Violence in the Workplace. In 2006, Connie received a UT Austin Outstanding Supervisor award.
Rita Handrich, Ph.D., Psychologist
Rita Handrich is a licensed psychologist who has worked in a variety of mental health settings over the past 17 years (e.g., community mental health, public and private psychiatric facilities, private practice offices, and in forensic rehabilitation with the criminally insane). Rita works with individuals seeking help for: depression and anxiety, serious mental illness, managing chronic conditions (physical and mental) in the workplace, midlife changes and choices, and generational differences and/or conflicts at work. She also consults with managers on a variety of workgroup issues. Rita presents workshops on topics such as generational differences at work, the manager's response to workgroup disruption, and on the recognition and self-management of various psychiatric diagnoses.
Susan Harnden, LCSW, Clinical Social Worker
Susan Harnden has been a Clinical Social Worker for over sixteen years. She has worked with people with a variety of professional and personal concerns including: depression, anxiety, addiction, grief and loss, and chronic health problems. She specializes in work with communication and relationship problems. In addition to working at the Employee Assistance Program she has worked in inpatient and outpatient psychiatric and chemical dependency facilities, as well as, a middle school student assistance program and her own private practice. She has developed and presented workshops on a variety of topics including, substance abuse, parenting, self-esteem, and communication to numerous community and educational organizations. Susan serves as a communication consultant for divisions and departments throughout the UT Austin campus. She also supervises interns from the UT School of Social Work. She received her Masters degree in Social Work from Washington University.
Monica Scamardo, M.S., Psy.D., Psychologist
Monica Scamardo is a licensed psychologist. She has a doctorate in counseling psychology with a specialization in the application of Systems Theories and short-term counseling approaches. Her master's degree is in couples and family therapy with special training in multicultural populations. Monica works with professional and personal concerns, including: managing change, reactions and stress; relationship/interpersonal problems; grief/loss; anxiety/depression; and goal-setting and achievement. She consults with and coaches managers and employees dealing with workplace problems, change management, and leadership development. Monica also creates and conducts training on a variety of personal and workplace topics including: Emotional Intelligence, Managing Difficult Behaviors, and Building Trust & Morale. In 2005, Monica received a "SLICE Award" from the Vice President of Employee Campus and Services at UT Austin for recognition of her service, leadership, innovation, creativity, and excellence.
Christopher Solis, Administrative Associate
Christopher Solis comes to UT with a distinguished career and over 20 years experience in administrative management. Over the past 8 years, he has worked for the University of California in the Office of the President and at the campus of UC Davis. Christopher is a twelve-year U.S. Navy veteran serving in Human Resources as a Personnelman 1st Class. Upon his return to civilian life, he provided telephonic interpreter services for the deaf in his native, California. An active community volunteer, Christopher's passion is providing assistance and support to others. He is especially grateful for his experiences working in the affected areas of Louisiana and Texas following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita with the U.S. Small Business Administration. At the Work/Life Services and Employee Assistance Program, he serves as a point of contact for University staff, faculty and dependents concerning EAP services as well as the Staff Emergency Fund.
Jeff Stellmach, LCSW, Clinical Social Worker
Jeff Stellmach is a licensed Clinical Social Worker who has over 12 years of counseling experience in various mental health settings. He has worked in inpatient and outpatient psychiatric facilities, HIV/AIDS clinics, residential treatment centers for adolescents, community health clinics, and nursing homes. Jeff works with individuals seeking help for: depression, anxiety, stress management, substance abuse, grief and loss, caring for aging parents, and men's issues. He has presented trainings on subjects including assertive communication, stress management, integrating mental health treatment into basic medical care, and crisis management. He has been involved in developing grant-funded programs and in data collection for program evaluation. Jeff received his Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Texas at Austin.
