Personal Counseling: When to Consult with the EAP

Personal counseling is used for different reasons. Many people decide to schedule an appointment if they are:

    • overwhelmed or stressed
    • burdened by a secret
    • feeling like they have no control
    • angry, irritable, or worried a lot of the time
    • feeling sad, helpless, or hopeless
    • sleeping too much or too little
    • having unusual ideas or sensations
    • finding it difficult to get out of bed
    • having difficulty concentrating
    • faced with a major life decision
    • unable to manage daily responsibilities
    • concerned about their use of alcohol or drugs
    • dealing with the loss of a loved one
    • harming themselves or someone else

Manager Consulting: When to Call the EAP

Managers consult with the EAP for different reasons. Consider scheduling a meeting with us if you are:

    • feeling like you have no control
    • making a major work decision
    • concerned about an employee's work behavior
    • tired of mediating between employees
    • uncertain about how to communicate with your supervisee or supervisor

    • uncertain how to deal with an employee's personal problems
    • interested in manager coaching through the EAP
    • interested in the resources UT has for managers

Organizational Change: When to Consult with the EAP

Individual employees and leaders, as well as teams, consult with the EAP for different reasons before, during, and after organizational changes. Common reasons they call the EAP are:

  • concern about the impact of the change on morale
  • building or rebuilding trust
  • questioning the impact of the change on relationships
  • in conflict with a co-worker or manager
  • concerned about a team member's response/reaction
  • uncertain about talking with a supervisor or team member
  • communication strategies to discuss the organizational change
  • overwhelmed or stressed by the uncertainty of the change
  • feeling like they have no control
  • angry, irritable or worried about the change
  • feeling sad, helpless or hopeless
  • having difficulty concentrating
  • dissatisfied with work
  • in need of an "outside" perspective
