Our counselors are highly experienced and skilled professionals who can assist you with personal and work-related problems. All of our counselors are experienced in assisting individuals who are dealing with depression, anxiety, other mental health concerns, substance abuse, stress management, grief and loss, couples counseling, relationship issues, communication, workplace challenges, as well as other concerns.
Our counselors consult with managers about communication, threat assessment, fitness for duty, referring a troubled employee, workplace crisis, and managing change.
Susan Harnden, EAP Coordinator, LCSW
Susan is a licensed clinical social worker and leads the Employee Assistance team in providing a full array of services to UT staff, faculty, retirees and dependents. She has 26 years of experience, 18 of those at the UT Employee Assistance Program providing manager and workplace consultation, individual, couples, and group counseling as well as serving as an adjunct professor in the School of Social Work. In addition to working at UT she has also worked in hospitals, schools, mental health clinics and her private practice. Her experience consulting with the threat assessment team and her understanding of workplace communication uniquely equips her to coach individuals to respond effectively in potentially threatening situations. She provides training on managing change and uncertainty and on best managerial practices.
Mary Bade, Ph.D.
Mary is a licensed psychologist with 16 years of professional experience. Her prior work experience includes being a counselor at an employee assistance firm, a director of a college counseling center, an instructor at three universities, a counselor at an outpatient mental health clinic, a college academic advisor, a college staff member, and a therapist in private practice. Mary specializes in facilitating resiliency in coping with crisis and in assisting individuals with eating disorders. She provides training on managing distress and disruption at work and how to refer an employee to EAP. She also facilitates groups for pre-tenure faculty members.
Deborah Sharp, LCSW
Deborah is a licensed clinical social worker with 15 years of professional experience. Her prior work experience includes being a counselor in nursing homes, a counselor for clients facing chronic or catastrophic illness or disability, a director in non-profit settings serving children with cancer and their families, an instructor at two universities, and a therapist in private practice. Deborah specializes in assisting individuals and their family members with major medical issues. She provides training on achieving and promoting work/life balance.
Jeff Stellmach, LCSW
Jeff is a licensed clinical social worker with 18 years of professional experience. His prior work experience includes being a social worker in psychiatric hospitals, a case manager with political refugees, a counselor at an outpatient mental health clinic, a counselor in primary care clinics and nursing homes, and a counselor and treatment supervisor for adolescents in residential treatment. Jeff specializes in eldercare issues by assisting individuals making care decisions and finding community resources for loved ones. He provides training on stress management, responding to crisis situations, and appropriate language and conflict management at work. Jeff provides counseling in Spanish.
