Purpose and Overview

The University of Texas at Austin’s Staff Emergency Fund (SEF) is provided through the generous and caring support of University employees and the efforts of UT Cares and Staff Council. This fund provides limited financial assistance when staff members are unable to meet immediate, essential expenses because of a temporary hardship related to an emergency situation. Funds granted to staff are counted as income and are subject to federal taxes.

How to Contribute

Contributing to the fund is your opportunity to help other UT Austin staff members who may be facing a temporary financial hardship due to a crisis or emergency. A crisis or emergency is a defined, time-limited, specific event such as the death of a family member, a fire, sudden serious illness, critical injury, etc.

If you would like to make a charitable contribution to the Staff Emergency Fund, you may send a check or money order to the University of Texas Foundation, PO Box 250, Austin, Texas 78767-0250, and designate "UT SEF" in the memo section.

Contributions to the Staff Emergency Fund can also be made through the Hearts of Texas Campaign by designating that your contribution go to The University of Texas at Austin Staff Emergency Fund (Charity Code: 228070).

Applicant Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicant is an active UT Austin staff member (non-faculty) and has a temporary financial hardship resulting from an emergency situation.

The temporary financial hardship has been caused by a defined, time-limited, specific event such as the death of a family member, a fire, serious illness, critical injury, etc. "Temporary" means that the applicant was previously able to manage their finances but is now several hundred dollars in debt and, with the SEF funds, could regain their financial stability within one or two months. An applicant with longer-standing financial problems, though clearly in need of financial assistance, would not meet the "temporary hardship" requirement, and, therefore, would not be eligible.
  • Full-time continuous employment as UT Austin staff (non-faculty) for a minimum of twelve months prior to the date of the application.
  • Employee in good standing; no active disciplinary action.
  • No previous SEF grant within the past two years.
  • Other possible resources have been considered and are not available or are insufficient.
