Frequently Asked Questions

Holiday Questions and Answers

  1. Who determines how many holidays state agency and university employees will receive?

The total number of holidays that can be observed each fiscal year by all state agencies and institutions of higher education are set by the state legislature. Institutions of higher education observe exactly the same number of holidays that are observed by all state agencies. Holidays are a combination of national and state observed holidays.

  2. Why does the number of holidays we receive vary each year?

State legislature stipulate that we can only observe those holidays that fall on a weekday. If one or more holidays fall on a Saturday or a Sunday, we are not able to observe that holiday by taking it at a different time, such as the previous Friday or the following Monday.

  3. Why don't state agencies and institutions of higher education observe the same holidays?

While all state agencies and institutions of higher education observe the same number of holidays, state statutes allow institutions of higher education the flexibility to establish their holiday schedules. Therefore, the number of holidays observed is always the same, but state agencies and institutions of higher education may have different schedules.

  4. What holidays does UT Austin typically observe when they fall on a weekday?

Our holiday schedule typically includes Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and the day after Thanksgiving, a winter break that includes Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, the day after Christmas, and New Year's Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Memorial Day and Independence Day.

  5. When is a floating holiday included in the holiday schedule?

A floating holiday can be scheduled in the fiscal years when all of the typical holidays and additional holidays utilized for the winter break are scheduled and holiday time still remains. The total number of holidays scheduled cannot exceed the number provided by the legislature.
