Your dependents who are covered by medical, dental or vision insurance at the time of your death may continue university insurance as surviving dependents if you have five years of service credit with the Teacher Retirement System or Optional Retirement Program at the time of your death. Three of the five years must have been within The University of Texas System. If your dependents aren't eligible to continue insurance as surviving dependents, they may be eligible for COBRA insurance.
When the Human Resource Service Center is notified of your death, they'll send your eligible surviving dependents information about continuing their university insurance. Surviving dependents aren't eligible for premium sharing and are responsible for paying the entire cost of the insurance (see rate chart). We'll bill them for their premiums. See Insurance Billing for more information. They may continue university insurance until they no longer meet the definition of dependents, become eligible for similar benefits elsewhere, or don't pay the premiums.
Surviving dependents may participate in annual enrollment each year during July and will receive an annual enrollment packet in the mail in June or July. They can change medical or dental plans by choosing from the options available in their area. They can also drop medical, dental or vision insurance for the new plan year beginning September 1. Although surviving dependents may change plans or end current insurance, they can't add insurance that wasn't in effect at the time of your death.
