quick links
If your work for the university is not academic in nature or closely related to your course of study, you should be assigned to a student non-academic job title.
These are the student non-academic job titles:
- 0073 H&F Resident Assistant
- 0074 Student Assistant
- 0075 Student Associate
- 0076 Senior Student Associate
- 0077 Student Technician
- 0079 Non-Affiliated Student Worker*
* The former High School Student Worker job code (0078) became inactive May 1, 2010. High school students should be assigned to the Non-Affiliated Student Worker title (job code 0079).
The compensation rates for student non-academic job titles are established each year by Human Resource Services, Staffing and Career Management Services. With the exception of H&F Resident Assistants, all employees in student non-academic positions must be paid on an hourly basis.
If you have questions about your job title or your assignment, please contact the HR representative in the department where you work. Your department may have requirements in addition to those discussed on this page.
Eligibility Criteria for Student Non-Academic Job Titles
Type of Work
- Your work must be non-academic in nature (e.g., clerical, service, technical).
- If you're performing academic research, you must be assigned to a student academic title.
Enrollment and Age Requirements
- To work in a student non-academic job title (other than Non-Affiliated Student Worker), you must be admitted to the university and meet these additional requirements:
- To be eligible for a fall or spring semester assignment, you must be enrolled in at least six semester credit hours for that semester.
- To be eligible for a summer assignment, you must:
- Be enrolled in at least three semester credit hours during any term of the summer session; OR
- Have been enrolled during the previous spring semester in at least six semester credit hours. You do not have to be enrolled during the summer. However, the Graduate School has an audit for graduate student assignments to the Student Technician (0077) job code during the summer to ensure the work is non-academic in nature. Further information is available from the Graduate School.
- To work in the Non-Affiliated Student Worker job title, you must:
- Be admitted to an institution of higher education other than UT Austin (e.g., community college, other college or university);
- Be enrolled in high school; OR
- Be admitted to UT Austin and enrolled in University Extension.
- You must also meet these requirements:
- To be eligible for a fall or spring semester assignment, you must:
- Be enrolled in your institution in at least six semester credit hours for that semester; OR
- Be enrolled in high school for that semester.
- To be eligible for a summer assignment, you must:
- Be enrolled in your institution in at least three semester credit hours during any term of the summer session; OR
- Have been enrolled during the previous spring semester, either in your institution in at least six semester credit hours or in high school. You do not have to be enrolled during the summer.
- Your hiring department may require you to document your eligibility for the Non-Affiliated Student Worker job title.
- If you are admitted to UT Austin and you do not meet the minimum enrollment requirements for student employment without including extension or online courses, the only student job title for which you are eligible is Non-Affiliated Student Worker. To count toward the enrollment requirements for this job title, the extension or online course must be taken through University Extension. You may combine UT Austin catalog courses with University Extension courses to meet the minimum enrollment requirements. Enrollment in University Extension does NOT count toward minimum enrollment requirements for federal work-study eligibility or student academic job titles.
- If you have graduated and are no longer a student, you are NOT eligible to be assigned to a student non-academic job title, with the following exceptions:
- Graduating student employees may remain in their student jobs until the official end of the semester in which they graduate (May 31 for spring, August 31 for summer, January 15 for fall).
- If you graduate at the end of the spring semester and worked in a student non-academic job title during that semester, you may remain in a student non-academic job title until August 31 of the year you graduated.
- If you are a high school student who graduated at the end of the spring semester, you may be assigned to the Non-Affiliated Student Worker title until August 31 of the year you graduated.
- Under university policy, you must be at least 15 years old on the first day of your employment to be eligible for a student title.
Assignments
- Your title is determined by your department based on the nature and complexity of your work.
- Your department also determines your pay rate within a range based on the complexity of work and internal departmental policy.
- You must complete a Student Application [PDF]. Only use this downloadable version.
- You may work up to 40 hours per week, subject to the federal child labor laws for employees under age 18 and, if you have a federal work-study award, subject to the university’s work-study policies. If you’re an international student, you may work no more than 20 hours per week during the spring and fall semester, but may work up to 40 hours per week during the summer and during semester and spring breaks. Contact the International Office for more information. The Graduate School also limits the number of hours a graduate student may be employed.

Finding a Student Non-Academic Job on Campus
Many non-academic positions for students are listed in the Hire a Longhorn job bank. However, on-campus student positions are generally filled at the department level, so we suggest you also check with the department where you’d like to work. The department may list open positions on its Web site or on bulletin boards located near the department’s administrative offices. Other resources are listed on the Finding a Student Job page.
