Two Peculiar Roommates

Since my friend and I made the dorm room lottery and we’ll be returning to the dorms next fall, we’ve been really contemplating where we’d like to live. Yeah, as if I needed something else to worry about. Anyway, this is actually pretty funny. In the beginning we assumed that we would stay in our current dorm room, but after some time and thought I mentioned to her, “Hey, wouldn’t you like to try something new? You know, maybe a connecting bath in the north side of the residence hall or more closet space? Besides, our view of the cafeteria is so depressing; it’s worth trying to live somewhere a little better.”

“Sure,” she responded. “I don’t mind.”

For this reason, as foolish as it may sound, this weekend we set out on a dorm room hunt way on the other side of our residence hall (it’s footsteps away).

The girl who lived in the first room we checked out was really nice. She mentioned that the room was always very cool and very quiet, but they had experienced minor problems with the shower. The room seemed very comfortable, and I fell in love with the view of three or four tall, leafy trees that gave a very pleasant shade. But we continued looking.

The second room was just as good. The bathroom was not as well-kept as the previous one but maybe we could take care of that problem ourselves if we lived there. Anyhow, the girl mentioned that it would get somewhat noisy since the elevator was just outside the room and because of the annoying exit door alarm. My future roommate and I continued on our hunt.

After looking at one or two other rooms, my friend realized her cousin happened to live on the floor where we wanted to live. She knocked on the door and my friend’s cousin immediately opened the door. She warmly greeted us and asked us to sit down on her bed. As soon as we walked in and noticed all of the commodities my friend’s cousin enjoyed, we knew this was the room of our dreams. It had a decent view, was very quiet, very well-kept and very near many other things. “You don’t understand,” I told my friend. “This is what I was looking for.” It was as if there had been a bright spotlight shining on the room (like in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation when the Griswolds find their Christmas tree in the woods.) and we instantly fell in love with it.

“So will you be returning?” we asked my friend’s cousin.

“Nope, but she is,” she said pointing to her roommate’s bed.

“Darn it,” I told my friend. They both laughed and we continued talking about the room.

Okay, maybe it’s pretty mean of me to wish someone wouldn’t be returning to her dorm, but if you guys were looking for what I was looking in a room, you would understand. We won’t try to coerce the girl into leaving her room or anything like that; hopefully, everything will turn out to our advantage though. Wish us luck!

This was a good experience for both of us, but imagine how crazy we’ll go when we search for an apartment.
