Good Times

This past week was crazy! On Monday, Feb. 10, my evening was awesome! At about noon I waited in line at the Erwin Center to get tickets for the basketball game against OU (University of Oklahoma). I was really excited about the game and was actually amazed at myself for going out of my way to see the ‘Horns on a Monday night. At about 3 p.m. my friend came and took my place, so I could go back to class. I went back to the Erwin Center at 5 p.m. only to realize that all of the wristbands were distributed and I was out of luck. After talking to other friends and scurrying around to get a wristband to make up for the three hours that I waited in line plus the other three my friend had waited, I got one. We were finally able to watch the game.

“Gosh,” said my friend during the game. “It would suck if we lost after all the trouble we’ve been through to get here.”

Of course we didn’t lose, and when I walked out of the game, I realized that every minute spent trying to acquire a wristband was completely worth it. I would have totally done it again.

The next evening I volunteered for Project Hook-Up with the admissions program. This was really neat! I called prospective freshmen, congratulated them on their admission to the university and answered any minor questions that they had. I got all sorts of responses such as “Oh well, that’s cool.” Sometimes the parents were 100 times more excited than the student who was accepted. I also enjoyed some lengthy conversations about students very curious about their status or their options at the university.

Wednesday (Feb. 12) was Clinton night. Since I had gotten very good seats to see our former president speak, I really did not want to pass up this opportunity. I haven’t really seen many professional speakers in person, but I was rather impressed by his eloquent speaking skills. He spoke about a variety of different issues ranging from world policies and commitments to his personal goals. It was definitely quite an experience.

So Thursday and Friday come around, and I’m thinking, “Uh oh, I have all these readings to catch up on plus the ones assigned for next week.” I caught up as much as I could and then I thought, “If I had the chance to experience what I did again, I would not hesitate to do so (of course it would have to be OU and not a random basketball team).” I am pleased that I can be able to look back at these memorable and unique opportunities in my college experience and know that I was a part of them!
