3 March 2003
I called her and she knew. Moments later she
stood at my door with Chocolate Moo-llenium Crunch and a much-needed
hug. And for a few seconds I caught a glimpse of the family I was
starting to build here at the university.
I knocked on her door on Saturday morning.
She opened the door and hugged me until there were no tears left.
And then I realized that no matter what happened these girls would
be there for me.
I never thought the first year of school would
bring so many emotions, so much confusion. As I feel my way through
this new lifestyle, there are so many incredible experiences and
so many disappointments. And I have grown accustomed to dealing
with things on my own. There are times though when you need to vent,
to cry, to yell and to be told that this too shall pass.
But what do you do when you are all alone
in a new town away from your mom, your dad, your sister or brother
or anyone who has seen you feeling this way before? During these
times you take a moment and thank your lucky stars. Then you call
her or go knock on her door, and she’ll be there. She’s
your friend, your new ally.
Made from the same material—forgiveness,
radiance, beauty and immeasurable love—women are able to form
bonds on unparalleled levels. I have been here roughly seven months
and have met some of the most amazing women. Each with her own source
of strength and willingness to share that strength when it is needed.
Relationship problems mean getting together
and talking about it over scoops and scoops and scoops of ice cream.
And when you are having one of those typical days and homesickness
might settle in soon, your girls know it’s time to have a
ladies’ night.
Just when the tests, reading and schoolwork
are about to catch up on your sanity, you and your girl download
Disney songs and boy band love songs. And when you can’t seem
to find your way, your friend is there to hold your hand and guide
you to where you need to be. Without these pillars of strength around
me, school would be unbearable and the heartaches would last so
much longer. I take comfort in knowing that I am someone’s
pillar and these women are mine. That’s the blessing that
comes with being a girl.
