20 January 2003
I mentioned a ski trip in the last journal.
One of my friends, a person I knew from the dorm, took a fall on
the slopes on a run he was fully familiar with and died. My condolences
go out to the Halls and his friends for their loss.
This semester I am extremely excited about
classes. It promises to be a lot of work, but a whole lot of fun
as well. The way it breaks down is this. I have Latin with a teacher
who might actually be able to teach me something in the classroom,
as opposed to my last semester experience of sitting around with
the book and hoping to learn. I have a class called the Pursuit
of Happiness with the head of the Humanities Department and the
class consists of three five-page papers and a full day of discussing
and debating every class. I have a class called Conflict and Peace,
which is a study of nonviolence. And finally I have my Honors Writing
component psychology class that, while introductory, actually allows
each student to specialize in an aspect of psychology of his or
her choice through two eight-page papers.
Time management is going to be an important
aspect of this semester for me. It is not that my time is stretched
too thin, but that I have so much more time. I quit my job, and
so I have regained 18 more hours a week for my own use. Among other
things, though, I need to have some sort of money. Because I have
something to prove and more personal interests in the project, I
am going to start a business. Hurrah capitalism. I will keep everyone
up to date on how that's working out.
I am also making sure to take time out of
every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for writing. This gives me some
structure, forces me to produce at a somewhat regular interval and
should translate well to the points when I have a lot of writing
to do. I have had some success with my attempts at poetry, in that
the very first one I ever wrote for my own enjoyment made it into
finals at Poetry.com. It should be included in the Reflections page,
along with another original. I would definitely like to hear critique
and commentary on them, so if you get a chance give them a look.
I am supposed to have started working out
again, but have a complete lack of motivation, so I am also going
to add thirty minutes of working out into my Monday-Wednesday-Friday
schedule.
I, also, if you believe it, went to a frat
party recently with Rob, one of the dorm folk. Nothing special,
I don't think anyone needs to worry about me joining a frat, but
an experience nonetheless.
