Political/Economic Update

Politics

A walkout against war in Iraq happened on campus recently. While I am against war in Iraq, I was also very much against the walkout. If it had been held as a rally at 6 p.m. or thereabouts I would surely have attended. As it stands, there was no good reason to walk out of classes. I could understand a university-wide walkout if the university were pointing its own weapons of mass destruction at Iraq or if the university itself was sending troops there. All that was proven by the student walkout was that if you offer people a chance to shirk responsibility and give them free food, live music and community, they will come. I believe the walkout devalues education, and while I know some people attended because they really believe in the cause, I think that as a whole it was a worthless gesture.

On another recent note, there were some enormous pictures of aborted babies outside of Gregory Gym. I understand the pro-life message, and while I may not identify with it, I can respect it when it is portrayed in a positive light. The message being sent out by the pro-lifers was simply negative. I even understand that people have become desensitized by mass media and sometimes imagery is needed to jolt them to attention. I think that the organization responsible went about it in a completely unsuitable manner.

Economics

My business is now a business in the eyes of the state of Texas as well as the county of Travis. I have everything I need, and printing should start this weekend at the very latest. The product line will start with the Earl Warren and R. Buckminster Fuller shirts, with another five or six designs to debut at the Renaissance Market.
