5 Events NOT to miss this month

Mark your calendars folks. April in Austin brings some unique events to the city that, if at all possible, should not be missed. Check out my 5 Events in April list here.

1. 40 Acres Fest

April 5, 2008 from 12:00 noon 5:00 pm
Located at the Main Mall (in front of the Tower)

Show your Burnt Orange spirit at the 16th 40 Acres Fest! The 40 Acres Fest is a yearly, campus-wide event put on by students at The University of Texas. It is the largest student run event in the nation and if you have not been to a 40 Acres Fest yet, then you should definitely head out for awhile this weekend! The event features a variety of games (did someone say Guitar Hero?!), obstacle courses, musical chairs, and tons of food. Dont miss the live concert at the tail-end of the event this years headliner is The Roots! Free admission.

2. Louisiana Swamp Thing and Crawfish Festival 2008

April 5, 2008 from 10 am 10:30 pm
Located at 18th and Congress

Head down to Swamp Thing for a seriously fun Louisiana themed event. The event features over 6,000 pounds of crawfish (!) plus tons of other bayou classics. But, believe me, the food is not the only reason to attend. Last years event featured great live music, and the set list for this year looks equally amazing. Jam out to Blues, Zydeco, Cajun, Rock, and more at the festival. If you catch the music bug while youre there, fear not! They offer Zydeco lessons at the festival. Oh, and yes, there are beads! True Louisiana spirit brought right to the heart of downtown Austin. $15 at the gate.

3. Scholtzskys Bun Run & Pre-Race Expo

Pre-Race Expo:
April 12, 2008 from 9 am 6 pm
Auditorium Shores
Bun Run:
April 13, 2008 from 7:45 am
Begins at S. 1st Street

Now in its 26th year, the Bun Run is the longest running 5k run in Austin. The race benefits the Austin Sunshine Camps and usually has around 5,000 attendees. From competitive runners to walkers, the race is composed of a wide variety of participants. Fido is welcome to join in on the Bun Run and kids under 13 can participate in the Lil Bun Run during the Pre-Race Expo. The race supports a great cause and is a fabulous tradition here in Austin. So get your bun out there and join in! $10 Lil Bun Run Registration, $20 Bun Run Untimed, $22 Timed Canine Bun Run, $22 Time Bun Run.

4. Eeyores Birthday Party

April 26, 2008 from 11:00 am dark
Pease Park

Eeyores Birthday Party has become an infamous Austin tradition. Started in 1963 as a picnic for University of Texas students, the event has grown into a major Austin festival. This years event marks the 45th Birthday celebration and benefits several non-profit groups in Austin. If you make it to the event, dont forget to wear a costume! Almost everyone who attends is dressed quite festively. There are contests, live music, and of course, a real Donkey in honor of Eeyore. Free admission.

5. Wiener Dog Races

April 26 & 27, 2008 from 10:00 am
Buda City Park (Buda, Texas)

Okay, so this is a little bit outside of Austin. But who doesnt want to see little wiener dogs racing their little hearts out? I know I do! Saturday and Sunday feature qualifying races for the big showdown on Sunday afternoon. If I remember correctly, the Wiener Dog Races is part of a larger county fair that also includes a Chili Cookoff, live entertainment, food, and craft vendors. Oh, and ps – this years Wiener Dog Race theme is Nacho Wiener. Free admission.

Other cool April events: Austin Fine Arts Festival, Old Settlers Music Festival, Austin Reggae Festival, Mela Fair at Barsana Dham, Taste of Mexico, Umlauf Garden Party
