Coffee Shop Soundtrack or: Chapter 1 – Girls and Coffee
He sits at the table with his laptop open.
His senses are dead from the aroma of coffee by this point,
And he fails to notice the subtleties of any of the smells.
The potent smell of his drink is slowly fading because he has it so often.
Nevertheless, he orders it without fail.
This time, he doesn’t order right away;
He waits for her to arrive.
He always gets there early and studies
As if she wasn’t the reason for him being there.
He notices her as she enters and heads straight for the restroom;
Fixing her makeup because of the muggy evening, perhaps.
She is wearing the gray sweater he has slowly become fond of
Because of the way it drapes off of her shoulders.
She emerges, surprised to see him already waiting.
Her hair is seemingly the same every time he sees her,
But he likes the way it adds to her personality.
He insisted on buying her a drink.
She did as expected and insisted she didn’t want anything.
He asked what her favorite drink was and bought it anyway.
They talked for an hour and forty-five minutes.
They stared, they laughed, they philosophized, they learned.
The hardness of the chair was beginning to make him uncomfortable,
But the coversation put him at ease.
He had fun twisting words and was surprised to not be asking all of the questions.
He didn’t want to leave.
He can’t say the same for her, but the converse is assumed.
She often played with her hair;
Flipping it from one side of her head to the other.
She often played with her rings;
Taking them off and putting them on.
She found it diffult to look him in the eye,
He found hers rather aesthetically pleasing.
He didn’t want to leave,
But it was late.
He walked her back.
They said goodbye as they embraced each other with a hug.
He found it odd that while she is 5′10,
She didn’t go over the top for the hug,
As if she were short and couldn’t reach.
The last time he had coffee with a girl
He did not achieve the desired result.
But this time, this time felt different to him.
The question remains,
When it all comes down
To a sunrise on the eastide
Will she be there to carry home
The remains of his wasted youth
The wasted time on them
That have him shaking and waiting for something more?
