Coke & Pretzels!!!!!

Lol. So the topic sounds a bit random and that may be because it actually is. Lately I’ve had a few discussions with different people on the best ways to stay awake late at night. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!. At least I’d like to mention that I do not encourage staying up late to study but… if you simply have to I’d try coke and pretzels.

It’s the perfect combo. The caffeine in the coke keeps you awake and although fattening, it’s really not as addictive as coffee. I know there are plenty of coffee lovers out there who are probably thinking I’m an idiot for encouraging people to replace coffee with coke but it’s ok because I’ve done it for three years and it works. How does it work? Caffeine keeps you awake while the pretzels keep you full. People usually snack while studying and eating muffins or candy isn’t really the best idea. Muffins or any of that good stuff tend to weigh you down after a while and sugar makes you crash after a few moments of experiencing a sugar high. Both result in ZZZZ’s.

Pretzels on the other hand contain salt which does not put you to bed. Salt makes you thirsty!! Being thirsty makes you drink more coke which means more caffeine which means you stay up. Staying up makes people hungry therefore you’ll probably want more pretzels which means you’ll want more coke and you get the picture. It’s like a circle, it keeps going around and around and around until you decide to go to bed. It’s the perfect solution!

Ok it might not be the perfect solution but it def. will work for a while. Once again I’d like to mention that I do not encourage late nights but if you must stay up, be smart about it. Please!

Collge Tip #1

Never, EVER, stay up past 3:00 a.m. working on papers/ studying and expect to be fully functional by morning. Especially don’t expect functionality after doing this more than three days in a row.

Just trust me on this one.

Post OU, Pre-Halloween…It’s A Great Time to Be A Longhorn

Hey what’s up everybody?

So OU Weekend was nothing less than epic and there are way too many hilarious stories that would take up too much time to tell here, some of which include; putting people through ceilings, getting out-wrestled by a girl, sleepwalking (not me), random jiu jitsu fights, awesome pranks, and OU sucking!

This past weekend one of the brothers, Javi, threw his annual Halloween party, Javi-Ween. It was great except for the fact that I lost my phone and now I’m way out of touch with everyone. I dressed up an escaped convict and I was wearing handcuffs the whole night which made things a little more challenging/fun. I have pictures on Facebook, feel free to add me if you wanna see them.

Now for my story of unbelievable procrastination and the trump card of all time. So I’m working on a project with two people in my educational psychology class, one of them a football player. It’s a 15 minute presentation and three separate 5 page papers that we have to finish. I didn’t even know about the 5 page papers til literally 12 hours before they were due and we met up at 8 the night before to begin and finish the presentation/papers. As soon as I get there, my partners get into an argument about racism and this seriously goes on for an hour and a half! It was quite unbelievable and somewhat humorous. About forty minutes into it, I send both of them a message asking if we can get back to work on the presentation… to no avail. After an hour and a half the girl is so mad she decides to kick both of us out of the group and do the entire project herself. Me and the other guy soon realize that if she kicks us out, we can explain to the teacher what happened and not have to finish it that night! Both greatly relieved, we head home exclaiming how screwed our other partner is, lol. I talked to my professor today and we now have an extra week to create our own project. If there’s anything to be learned from this experience, it’s this: If you’re running late for a huge project and don’t wanna stay up all night, anger one of your partners into doing it all themselves! jk, jk

In other news: Apparently the brothers are upset at how nice I’ve been to the pledges, gotta fix that. Halloween is this week and I think we all know how awesome Austin is that time of the year, I can’t wait. My parents visited for family weekend, that was fun. Also! I’m gonna be at Longhorn Saturday this weekend so I hope to see some of you there. For now, I have a paper to work on for my KIN 316 class, ttyall soon.

Z Files

This past week I decided to do something that I had not expected. I resigned from my press intern position at Senator Judith Zaffirini’s (Z) office. I had been interning there since July and appreciated the experience. My journey to being a press intern was an interesting one.

This past June I studied abroad in Accra, Ghana, and before I left I wanted to find an internship to work once I arrived back in America. I saw a posting on my college’s career services and applied. Fast-forward a month and the position was still unfilled once I arrived back from Accra. I interviewed and was offered the position.

Being a political communications major, a press intern is the equivalent of a pre-med major interning at a hospital; it’s the most desired position! Learning the interworking of the Texas state capitol was something that I would find to be very difficult. Seniority is taken very seriously, and as an intern you are certainty at the bottom of ladder.

Nonetheless, I soaked up knowledge, which included drafting speeches, letters and advisories. This means I did real work that Z edited and approved. It is rare for an intern to do “real” work so I knew I was in a special place.

What I learned very quickly is that politics is all about power. Z, being a senior member of the senate, had a lot of power, and it was seen on a daily basis. This is when I knew I wanted to be apart of the power system. That of course is the only way to change the status quo.

So from time to time I will revisit my Z files and provide specific examples at how politics is nothing more than reality TV.

Long week…… OU & Masquerade

It’s midterm season and although I didn’t have but one midterm my days have been extremely busy and long. It seems like everything is beginning to calm down but only to spiral back out of control. Halloween weekend is coming up, a weekend I’ll spend on 6th Street working, and I have quite a few projects due the week after. I’d like to say that I’ll stay ahead of myself and work hard this coming week but… we all know that never happens.

On a better note.. Dallas was fun last weekend. Friday I spent the night at the west end just walking around and chanting “Texas Fight.” It was a bit crazy and I saw a couple of fights as I walked into the area but that’s about it. The rest of the night consisted of fans simply enjoying themselves. For anyone who has not experienced UT vs. OU weekend I HIGHLY recommend it. It is definitely one of the best rivalries around and it will be one of your most memorable weekends at UT. Being at the game is something else. I can’t really describe the excitement and enjoyment of being in the stands at Cotton Bowl while the two teams go at it on the field. Afterward it’s always fun to walk around the fair and eat fried food. I seriously spent over $200 and I don’t even know where it all went. I remember eating a funnel cake with a sprite and paying for parking way too many times but other than that I’m clueless, but however much I spent was worth it. I’ll definitely do it again next year. Hopefully I’ll be able to get front row seats for once.

Well that was last weekend. It was pretty great. This weekend I have a huge party I’m looking forward to. My organization, Texas Latin Dance, is throwing a club party at a local club, many orgs. on campus do this in order to raise money for events and activities, and I’ll be DJing for them all night long! I’m more excited because I’m the person in charge of the orgs. external affairs so I was actually in charge of putting this event together. I did it last year as well and the outcome was much better than I’d expected. The theme is a masquerade and we expected no one to actually wear masks but to our surprise about three quarters of the people there had went out and bought masks. I’m expecting a similar turnout this year but we will have to wait and see.

In conclusion..

It’s been a long week but it’s getting better. I hope I can stay focused and not get behind on the work due two weeks from now. Only time will tell..

Until next post readers!!

Alternative OU

So unlike 99.999% of UT’s students this weekend, I did not attend OU. I just didn’t get tickets in time and then, honestly, I don’t know, but I didn’t totally want to go, so I didn’t. HOWEVER! Do not think that that means I sat around and twiddled my thumbs all weekend. Instead, I ended up having a blast, specifically because my friends and I heard about this thing called the “Tour de Fat” (I know, what an awful name), but we went and it was incredible! Pictures below:

Welcome to the Austin Bike Zoo! I don't totally know where we were (my friend drove), but it was this huge, hippy bike fest, and this was the sign!

So really randomly, this band that I absolutely LOVE was playing at Tour de Fat. There name is Sean Hayes, and seeing them live just made the day that much more incredible.

This is just an example of one of the very strange (and in this case, very small bikes) that Tour de Fat provided for people to try riding. Word to the wise: it's harder than you think!

At the end of the festival, they held a "funeral for the car," and encouraged all attendees to give up their cars for the next year. My friends and I weren't too keen on that, but the sentiment (and show of the whole thing) was enough.

OU Still Sucks!

This past weekend was my first trip to the infamous UT vs. OU game. I went with a couple of my girlfriends, Tia, Brittany, Bree and Shala. Being that it was my first trip to the game, we had to do it big.

Registration, already?

Ahhh the joys of being a graduate student – getting to register for classes before all the undergraduates :)  Problem is, there are way too many classes I would like to take on campus and not enough time to take them all! One week of searching through the course schedule, and then I must register.
