The Importance of Exploiting Your Provincial Resources

One of the key aspects of University life is the understanding and exercising of the numerous resources available to you once you pay your tuition. Here are some institutions that I’ve found supremely useful.

For your academic considerations:

  • The TxU Library Systems
The University campus is blessed with more than 10 Libraries. These places are probably where you are going to get most of your work done. The shelves and tomes create a studious atmosphere that I find extremely helpful when you’re knocking out yet another paper. The Libraries’ computers are also blessed with their own ITS network, which I recommend for traffic-heavy browsing.
  • The Undergraduate Writing Center
  • The UWC is located on the second floor of the FAC building, next to the main tower. Bring your papers here for free proofs and help. Appointments are welcome, but these guys accept walk-ins. They know what they are doing.

For your entertainment considerations:

  • The Texas Union
Every Wednesday & Friday in the fall semester they have screenings of the previous summer’s movies free of charge to all UT ID holders.
  • The Campus Wide Events Calender
Believe me, every day there’s something going on. UT and its departments regularly bring in speakers and lecturers from all over the world and from every discipline — I’ve personally seen ambassadors, directors, CEOs and that one guy whose life they made into the movie “Catch Me if You Can.”

For your living considerations:

  • Gregory Gym
They just renovated this place, it’s about as swank as all get-out. Bring your friends, and beat that freshman 15!
  • Cypress Creek Cafe
Get your grocery shopping done at inflated prices, then have a great lunch. This is probably the best food served on campus, but it will cost you $2+ the cafeteria prices. Oh, and speaking of cafeterias, Kinsolving is much much nicer than J2.
