When is Thanksgiving Again?
I’m sure it’s just me, but I can not wait until Turkey Day. I am sure my reasons are not as modest as I would like them to be. Honestly, I need a break before the break.
This week alone, I have to conduct two focus groups for a class research project. I have a presentation due on Thursday, and I turned in a 10 page paper on Wednesday. I also have to start writing a draft of my project with my group which is only about 25 pages when you add it all up. Point is, Turkey Day is needed.
But it is important in seemingly stressful times like this to see the joy in the moment. For example, on Thursday I will begin mentoring a very special little girl at the Ann Richards School (ARS). ARS has become the school of choice for my volunteering because I am simply amazed at what they are doing. The school is for girls only, and focuses on cultivating young female leaders. So basically, they are awesome. I am, however, kinda nervous about meeting my mentee, I hope she likes me. If nothing else, it will be refreshing to eat real cafeteria food with her.
I think as an underrepresented student at UT it is important for me to give back, and show other minorities that anything is possible. If I could ask my mentee to remember anything from out forthcoming encounters, it would be that she understand that being a minority among the majority does make her different, but makes her special. I have been blessed to have many mentors in my short educational career, and so I can appreciate just how special mentors are. It is perhaps the easiest and cheapest way to make an impact on a child’s life. If you want to get involved I suggest you check out the Ann Richards School website below.
