Do You Speak Longhornese? UT Lingo

Welcome Back Everyone! A special hello to my newly transferred Longhorns :)

If you are new to UT, there is some lingo you might want to know

Bevo
The University of Texas at Austin’s official mascot, a longhorn steer, accompanies the Longhorn football team to all home and many out-of-town games.

not to be confused with —>Bevo Bucks

Bevo Bucks
The easy-to-use, cashless form of payment accessible through a student’s ID card. Like a debit card, Bevo Bucks is a prepaid account that students use to purchase food, goods and services, both on and off campus. Funds can be added to a student’s Bevo Bucks account at any time.

The Drag
Refers to the portion of Guadalupe Street running between Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard (MLK Blvd.) and West Dean Keeton Street. The University Co-op, food establishments, clothing stores, etc., are located on “The Drag.”

- an Aggie once told me that every day students lose their lives trying to cross the Drag in order to get to class. Wow. that’s pretty stupid…even for Aggie. Don’t believe the lies. It’s safe to cross, ever since the invention of good ole trusty traffic lights. Just wait till the little man starts blinking, then walk. ;)

The Daily Texan
The Daily Texan has won more state, regional and national awards than any college newspaper in the nation. Students on the staff learn the business, from advertising to news writing and editing, press and pre-press operations to circulation. The Texan was also the first college publication to produce an online version at www.dailytexanonline.com.

Office Hours
Hours during which faculty and teaching assistants (TAs) are available to meet with students in their offices.

- You should really go to these so your prof can put a name with a face

Orientation Advisor (OA)
OAs assist new first-year, transfer and returning students and their families in their transition to UT Austin.

- cool peer leaders you meet during orientation. I was one!

Plus/Minus Grading

Yep, we have that here. If you’re a B+ or C+ student, you’ve come to the right place. A+ students, you’re out of luck. Those don’t exist here.

Good luck with the semester!
