Jay Banner is professor and Chevron Centennial Fellow in Geology and Deussen Fellow of Energy Resources in the Department of Geological Sciences. Dr. Banner is also the director of the Environmental Science Institute, which fosters interdisciplinary environmental science research, education and outreach across eight colleges and schools at the university.
His research and teaching interests center on Earth surface processes with the goal of understanding the interactions that occur between the atmosphere-land-ocean systems, and how these interactions are preserved in the geologic record.
Examples of Dr. Banner’s research projects are studies of cave deposits as records of the links between climate change and hydrology, studies of carbonate rocks as records of the chemistry of ancient oceans and studies of modern aquifers in urbanizing environments. Dr. Banner also leads several public and K-12 outreach initiatives, including the Hot Science—Cool Talks lecture series.
