Volunteers Needed for Fall 2008 International Student Orientation!

Orientation volunteers are needed during the month of August, 2008 to welcome new international students who will be arriving at UT for the Fall semester. Current students make invaluable contributions to the services offered to new students. Your empathy, experience, energy, and enthusiasm make the process fun for new students and International Office staff as well!
 
If you will be in Austin in August and want to volunteer, please contact Elizabeth Barrett at bbarrett@austin.utexas.edu.  Your name and email address will be entered on the volunteer e-list.  You will receive further information about new international student orientation volunteer opportunites.

The following is a list of possible volunteer activities:


Welcome Center:
Help new students in the International Office Welcome Center (WOH) answering questions about settling-in, housing, buses, shopping, etc.

Important Volunteer Opportunity: Refugee Services of Texas - Austin

Volunteer translators needed for Arabic, Farsi, Burmese, Thai, Karen, Kirundi, or Kiswahili.

The Austin section of Refugee Services of Texas, Inc. exists to provide quality resettlement services to legal refugees who come to the Austin area. Their programs help refugees to become self-sufficient and able to lead productive lives here in the United States. Refugees are people who are unable to return their home countries because of a well-founded fear of persecution based on their race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or belonging to a particular social group.

RST agency provides services to persons entering the United States with refugee status. The services RST provide include finding and furnishing housing, greeting refugees at the airport, orienting them to their new communities, transporting them to medical appointments and locating employment.
