J-1 Extension of Stay

An extension of stay is required for students who do not complete their degree program by the completion date specified on the Form DS-2019. Students must apply for an extension of stay before the expiration date of Form DS-2019, but no earlier than 60 days before the expiration date.

To apply for an extension of stay, bring the following to the International Office:

  • Passport and passports of dependents
  • Form I-94 and Forms I-94 of dependents
  • Form DS-2019
  • Proof of health insurance coverage for yourself and accompanying family members
  • A letter from academic advisor indicating your expected graduation date or a letter of admission into another degree program at U.T. Austin
  • Verification of funding (bank statement or letter of support from the department)
