J-1 Transfer

The United States Department of State coordinates the Exchange Visitor Program and must be notified whenever there is a change in J-1 program sponsors.

A transfer must be done when:

  • A student completes an academic program at another US school and plan to enroll at UT fo begin a new program.
  • A student transfers to UT during an academic program.
  • A student needs to change the J-1 sponsor (either to UT's sponsorship or to a sponsoring agency) during an academic program.

To apply for a transfer of program to UT, bring the following to the International Office:

  • Form DS-2019 from the new program sponsor (university or agency)
  • Passport and passports of dependents
  • Form I-94 and Forms I-94 of dependents
  • Proof of health insurance coverage for yourself and accompanying family members (if you will transfer to U.T. Austin's Exchange Visitor Program)

For the students transferring to another school/sponsoring agency:

See an Immigration Advisor in the International Office to have your record in SEVIS released to the new school.

If you are leaving the U.S. temporarily, you can accomplish the transfer to the new program by re-entering the U.S. using the Form DS-2019 issued by your new program sponsor.
