Transfer Procedures for F-1/J-1 Students
To be eligible to transfer to UT Austin, students must have maintained immigration status at the former institution.
F-1 Students:
- Download the Transfer Form and have it completed by the International Student Advisor at the institution at which you are currently enrolled (or most recently attended). This letter should be returned to the International Office at UT Austin by the student or by the International Student Advisor. The letter can be faxed to the International Office at 512-471-8848 or mailed to P.O. Box A, Austin, TX 78713-8901.
- Discuss the release date of your immigration record to UT Austin with your International Student Advisor. Be sure that you have completed any employment at your current school by the release date. Please note that if you need to travel after the end of your current program, you will need a transfer Form I-20 from UT Austin in order to re-enter the U.S. Please discuss any travel plans with your current International Student Advisor since they may influence the choice of the release date. The transfer form MUST contain a release date; forms without the release date will NOT be accepted.
- Once the transfer release date has passed, UT Austin will issue a new I-20 if sufficient financial support documents have been received. Your 'transfer pending' I-20 will be mailed to your at the mailing address that you provided to the University on your admissions application.
- Students must process a transfer to The University of Texas' Form I-20 within 15 days of beginning classes. Students who fail to apply for a transfer Form I-20 within 15 days of the first day of classes are considered to be out of status and must apply for reinstatement.
- Upon registration for classes, you will receive your final Form I-20 from UT Austin that will indicate that your immigration transfer has been completed. You will be notified by e-mail in the first two weeks of your first semester to UT Austin that your 'transfer completed' I-20 is ready for pick-up. It is very important to obtain the final transfer I-20 since it will need to be used for any future travel abroad.
Students who have been "out of status" at their previous institution must apply for reinstatement to student status through USCIS.
