Pre-Arrival Checklist

Make travel plans to attend the Welcome and Orientation Program
Making travel plans to include this important program will allow sufficient time for you to become familiar with the University, complete housing arrangements, complete immunization and tuberculosis testing requirements, and tend to other matters before registration. See the orientation schedule for more details.

Make financial arrangements
You should plan to receive at least $35,000 each year (more if you plan to bring dependents). Bring at least $17,500 with you when you arrive to cover first semester tuition, fees, books, and three month's living expenses. For more information about declaring money when you enter the US, see the Customs & Border Protection website.

Obtain your visa
If you reside outside the U.S, take your valid passport, Form I-20 or Form
DS-2019, and evidence of adequate financial resources to the nearest U.S. Consulate to apply for your visa. You may also need to provide proof of ties to your home country, such as job offers, evidence of ownership of a residence or property in your home country, or copies of bank statements from a bank in your home country. For more information about immigration matters, see the visa information for new students website.

Find resources about living in the United States
There are numerous international student organizations at UT Austin that are eager to be in contact with new students and answer questions about life at UTAustin. To access a list of these student organizations, visit the Dean of Student's website.

Education USA:
A very helpful website developed by the U.S. Department of State which includes information about undergraduate & graduate study and pre-departure information and resources.

For Students from China:
Visit the "Pre-Departure Orientation for Chinese Students" website developed by NAFSA: Association of International Educators. This is an excellent resource that answers many questions about: Academics, Improving English, Cultural Matters, Social Life in the US, Health & Safety, and Rights & Responsibilities.

Consider your short-term and long-term housing needs
See the Housing in Austin website for short and long-term options as well as suggested ways to seek off-campus housing. Assistance in finding housing will be available upon your arrival in the International Office. We are unable to reserve off-campus housing on your behalf. Bring an extra copy of your evidence of financial support with you to Austin; it is required for certain housing options.

Submit Proof of Immunizations
International students should not mail their form to UHS. Instead, bring your form to the Allergy/Immunization clinic on the 2nd floor of the Student Services Building when you arrive in Austin.  Students born outside of the U.S. will be barred from registering for classes (even during new student orientation) until UHS has documentation that they have met the medical clearance requirements.  Your physician or health care provider must complete the sections on your immunization history, including documentation of required immunizations.  ONLY Tuberculin PPD (Mantoux) skin tests and chest x-rays performed in the U.S. within 1 year of your enrollment at UT will be accepted.  More information can be found at <http://www.healthyhorns.utexas.edu>.

Plan Your Arrival
If you arrive on a Saturday or Sunday, you will find that the University, and most businesses, are closed. If you arrive on a weekday, we invite you to visit the International Office between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm.

The local airport, "Austin Bergstrom International Airport" (ABIA), is located approximately 15 miles (24 kilometers) from the campus. Unfortunately, we are unable to make arrangements to meet you at the airport. However, there are several transportation options:

  1. BUS - Capitol Metro's Route 100 Austin-Bergstrom Airport. Fare is $0.50. The UT Campus stop is at Dean Keeton (26th) St. and Speedway.
  2. SUPERSHUTTLE - Private provider. Approximate fare to the university area is $13-19 for one person, $10 for each additional passenger. Phone: 1-800-258-3826 Prior reservations are not necessary. Follow the signs in the airport to the Supershuttle (Blue Van) reservation desk.
  3. TAXI - Approximate fare to UT Austin is $25.
