Visiting Scholar Benefits

While the University of Texas at Austin receives many international visitors, it is important to note that the Visiting Scholar designation is a non-compensatory appointment conferred by the Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies. For information on the procedures to be followed in obtaining this appointment, please consult the prior listing "Visiting Scholar Designation."

All visiting scholars are urged an orientation for new visiting scholars and faculty presented every Monday and Wednesday morning at 10:00am and Tuesday and Thursday afternoon at 2:00pm in the International Office (phone number 471-1211, 600 W. 24th St., Wooldridge Hall). The orientation normally lasts for one hour and provides information concerning immigration regulations, taxes, medical insurance, community involvement, transportation, banking, and obtaining a driver's license, I.D., and Social Security number.

If you are a visiting scholar and wish to park an automobile or motorcycle on the campus, you must obtain a parking permit. This can be arranged for you once you have obtained a letter from the department at UT with which you are affiliated or from the Dean of Graduate Studies. This letter will entitle you to an "A" parking permit.

If you wish, visiting scholars are eligible to use the gym or any other recreational facilities. There is a charge for this which must be paid in advance.

In the interest of protecting our international students and visiting faculty, the Board of Regents of The University requires that all international students and J-1 visa-holders (as well as the accompanying spouse and dependents of J-1 visa-holders) be adequately covered by health insurance. Any visiting scholar, whether employed by The University or not, whose DS-2019 form for a J-1 visa has been processed by the International Office at UT is eligible for the same type of insurance as that which is available to students. The insurance program is one of the important matters covered in the orientation program for our international guests.

As a visiting scholar you are entitled to the same discounts on campus events as every other member of the UT faculty.

An identification card (ID) will be provided to you after you obtain a letter from the Dean of Graduate Studies. The primary purpose of this ID is to enable you to use the library.
