The University of Texas at Austin has the distinction of being the No. 1 Peace Corps Volunteer-producing University in the Southwest. Since 1961, close to 1,200 UT alumni have volunteered throughout the globe, serving in 135 developing nations on grassroots projects. UT's best and brightest have represented their alma mater well, lending their skills and knowledge to programs in agriculture, business, community development, education, environment, health and information technology. Currently, 68 UT alumni serve in five continents. Recognizing UT's tremendous contribution to the agency, Peace Corps decided to place a recruiter on campus to specifically address the needs of the University. This campus representative is hosted by the International Office, centrally located on the corner of Dean Keeton Drive and University Drive. In March 2001, Austin celebrated Peace Corps' 40th anniversary with a proclamation from the Texas Senate. The proclamation, read on both House and Senate floors of the State Legislature, designated March 6 as "Peace Corps Day" in Texas and honored the 4,400 Returned Peace Corps Volunteers who reside in the Lone Star State. In April 2001, Peace Corps recognized the University of Texas for its contribution to international development at its 40th Anniversary Celebration on campus. Peace Corps not only benefits from its highly-educated pool of Peace Corps applicants from UT, but several Returned Peace Corps Volunteers either study, work or teach on campus. Peace Corps looks forward to continuing its successful relationship with UT and attracting its top students to replenish the current number of volunteers: 7,300 men and women in 76 countries. |
