RESOLVED:Delays on inbound mail
Service Restored

The backlogs on both appliances have drained and they have been returned to service. ITS Systems will continue to monitor the situation, but at this point the issue is resolved.


The backlogs on the two affected IronPort appliances were caused by an inbound message flow that was composed of large number of large messages. This flow has stopped, but the backlogs are draining slowly because the large size of the messages causes excessive resource consumption. The messages cannot be deleted from the current processing state they are in, so they must be allowed to drain. At the current rate, the backlog will be clear by 3:00 AM tomorrow morning. However, the processing rate should speed up significantly once the problematic messages are processed, so the backlog is expected to clear earlier than that. In the mean time, we are operating comfortably on only two inbound units. The two backlogged units will remain out of production so they can drain without additional load being applied to them.


There are significant backlogs on two of our four inbound IronPort email security appliances. Systems staff are investigating.
