We took a range of steps to address the slowness some users experienced in Canvas yesterday. About 15% of Canvas users were impacted at some point in the day. We addressed several root-cause issues that should result in improved performance for affected users today.

The urgent maintenance event announced earlier is complete. Users can now access and use Canvas again.

Canvas Status Update
Brief (less than 5 minutes) urgent maintenance event overnight

Starting at about 2:00 AM Eastern Time (1:00 AM Central Time) this morning, we will perform a series of very brief urgent maintenance events. Your users will be unable to access Canvas for about five minutes between 2:00 AM ET and 4:00 AM ET (1:00 AM and 3:00 AM Central Time). We will send you a notice when the event affecting your instance is complete.

The purpose of this event is to bring upgraded hardware online to serve your instance of Canvas. A small percentage of Canvas users experienced slowness in the application at points today; this is a preventative step to ensure that performance is normal for all users as usage increases.

As of 11:00 am today Canvas has been running slowly and is now confirmed to be running in degraded status. This impacts all canvas users.
