Setting up a Desktop E-mail Program - Mozilla

Installing Mozilla

  1. Download the latest version of Mozilla from BevoWare.
  2. If Mozilla does not start automatically, double-click the downloaded file to launch the Install Wizard.
  3. Follow the instructions in the Install Wizard to install Mozilla on your computer.

Configuring Mozilla

  1. Open Mozilla.
  2. Select Mail & Newsgroups from the Window menu.
  3. Select Email Account, click Next.
  4. Enter the appropriate information in the Your Name and Email Address fields, click Next.
  5. In the Server Information window:
    • Select either IMAP or POP as the type of incoming server depending on how you want to define your account.
    • Enter "mail.utexas.edu" in the Incoming Server field.

      NOTE: The Outgoing Server is may already be set to mail.utexas.edu by default.
    • Click Next.
  6. At Incoming User Name, enter your basic e-mail mailbox name, and then click Next.
  7. Enter a name for this account in the Account Name field, click Next.
  8. Verify the information in the Congratulations window, click Finish to save your settings and exit the Account Wizard.

    NOTE
    : After configuring Mozilla:
    • Mozilla tries to connect at this point and fails, which is OK.
    • Click Cancel if you are prompted for a password
  9. Close Mozilla mail.

Securing Mozilla

  1. In the Mozilla Web browser window, select Mail & Newsgroups from the Window menu.
  2. At Accounts, select View settings for this account.
  3. In the Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings window, select your basic e-mail account from the list.
  4. Select Server Settings.
  5. Check Use secure connection (SSL). The port number will change, which is OK. Do not check "Use Secure Authentication" because basic e-mail does not support this setting and it is unnecessary when using secure connections.

  6. Select Outgoing Server (SMTP).

  7. Make sure the server name is mail.utexas.edu, then:
    • Enter "587" in the Port field, if it is not already entered.
    • Check Use name and password.
    • At User Name, enter your basic e-mail mailbox name("umbs-username").
    • At Use secure connection, select TLS.
  8. Click OK to dismiss the Account Settings dialog.

    NOTE: Send a test e-mail from another account to your basic e-mail account to make sure everything works.
