Patching Outlook XP And 2003
Make sure that you have the latest service pack for patching your version of Outlook. This procedure will not work if you do not have a fully patched system.
NOTE: You must use Internet Explorer for this procedure.
- Go to the Office Update site.
- Click the Check for Updates button.
- Install the updates as prompted.
- Restart your computer to complete the installation process.
Configuring Outlook XP And 2003
- Open Outlook.
- From the Tools menu, select E-mail Accounts.
- Under E-mail, select Add a new e-mail account.
- Select either IMAP or POP depending on how you want to set up your account, and click Next.
- In the Internet E-mail Settings {IMAP|POP} window, enter your information in the following fields:
- User Information
- Enter a display name (such as "UT Mail" or "My Account") in the Your name field.
- Enter your basic e-mail address (username@mail.utexas.edu) in the E-mail address field.
- Server Information
- Enter "mail.utexas.edu" in the Incoming mail server {IMAP|POP} field.
- Enter "mail.utexas.edu" in the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) field.
- Logon Information
- Enter your basic e-mail user name in the User Name field.
- Enter your password in the Password field.
- Confirm that Logon using secure password authentication is not selected.
- User Information
- Click More Settings.
Securing Outlook XP And 2003
- In the Internet E-mail Settings window, select the Outgoing Servers tab.
- Make sure that My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication is checked.
- Make sure that Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected.
Caution: For basic e-mail do not use the Log on using option because your password could get out of sync and that would prevent you from sending e-mail.
- Select the Advanced tab.
- At Incoming server, select This server requires an encrypted [or secure] connection (SSL). The port number will change, which is okay.
- At Outgoing server select This server requires an encrypted [or secure] connection (SSL).
- Enter "25" in the Port field.
NOTE:If SBC or another Internet Service Provider (ISP) won't let you send mail to a remote server using port 25, enter "587" in the Port field.
- Click OK to close the window.
- In the E-Mail Accounts window, click Finish.
- Close Outlook and restart it for your selections to take effect.
