Setting up a Desktop E-mail Program - Outlook 2000

Patching Outlook 2000

Make sure that you have the latest service pack for patching your version of Outlook. This procedure will not work if you do not have a fully patched system.

  1. Go to the Office Update site.
  2. Click the Check for Updates button.
  3. Install the updates as prompted.
  4. Restart your computer to complete the installation process.

Configuring Outlook 2000

  1. Open Outlook.
  2. From the Tools menu, select Accounts.
  3. Select the Mail tab.
  4. Click Add, then select Mail.
  5. In the Display name field, enter your name, click Next.
  6. In the Internet E-mail Address window E-mail address field, enter your basic e-mail address (umbs-username@mail.utexas.edu), click Next.
  7. In the E-mail Server Names window:
    • Make sure that My incoming mail server is a is set to {IMAP|POP} depending on how you set up your account.
    • Enter "mail.utexas.edu" in the Incoming mail server field.
    • Enter"mail.utexas.edu" in the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server field.
    • Click Next.
  8. In the Internet Mail Logon window, enter your basic e-mail address (umbs-username@mail.utexas.edu) in the Account name field.
  9. Enter your password.
  10. Make sure that Log on using Secure Password Authentication is unchecked, click Next.
  11. Click Finish.

Securing Outlook 2000

  1. From the Tools menu, select Accounts.
  2. Select the Mail tab.
  3. Select your basic e-mail account and click Properties.
  4. Select the Servers tab.
  5. Make sure that the following information is correct:
    • Server Information
      • My incoming mail server is a is set to {IMAP|POP} depending on how you set up your account.
      • Incoming mail is set to mail.utexas.edu
      • Outgoing mail (SMTP) is set to mail.utexas.edu
    • Incoming Mail Server
      • Account Name is your basic e-mail address (umbs-username@mail.utexas.edu).
      • Password field is your basic e-mail password.
  6. Under Outgoing Mail Server, make sure that My server requires authentication is checked.
  7. Click Settings.
  8. Make sure that Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected.
    Caution: For basic e-mail do not use the Log on using option because your password could get out of sync and that would prevent you from sending e-mail.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Select the Advanced tab.
  11. At Outgoing mail, select This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
  12. Enter "25" in the Port field.

    NOTE: If SBC or another Internet Service Provider (ISP) won't let you send mail to a remote server using port 25, enter "587" in the Port field.
     
  13. At Incoming mail select This server requires a secure connection (SSL). The port number will change, which is okay.
  14. Click OK.
  15. Click Close.
  16. Close Outlook and restart it for the changes to take effect.

    NOTE: Send a test e-mail from another account to your basic e-mail account to make sure everything works.
