Setting up a Desktop E-mail Program - Outlook 2000
Patching Outlook 2000
Make sure that you have the latest service pack for patching your version of Outlook. This procedure will not work if you do not have a fully patched system.
- Go to the Office Update site.
- Click the Check for Updates button.
- Install the updates as prompted.
- Restart your computer to complete the installation process.
Configuring Outlook 2000
- Open Outlook.
- From the Tools menu, select Accounts.
- Select the Mail tab.
- Click Add, then select Mail.
- In the Display name field, enter your name, click Next.
- In the Internet E-mail Address window E-mail address field, enter your basic e-mail address (umbs-username@mail.utexas.edu), click Next.
- In the E-mail Server Names window:
- Make sure that My incoming mail server is a is set to {IMAP|POP} depending on how you set up your account.
- Enter "mail.utexas.edu" in the Incoming mail server field.
- Enter"mail.utexas.edu" in the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server field.
- Click Next.
- In the Internet Mail Logon window, enter your basic e-mail address (umbs-username@mail.utexas.edu) in the Account name field.
- Enter your password.
- Make sure that Log on using Secure Password Authentication is unchecked, click Next.
- Click Finish.
Securing Outlook 2000
- From the Tools menu, select Accounts.
- Select the Mail tab.
- Select your basic e-mail account and click Properties.
- Select the Servers tab.
- Make sure that the following information is correct:
- Server Information
- My incoming mail server is a is set to {IMAP|POP} depending on how you set up your account.
- Incoming mail is set to mail.utexas.edu
- Outgoing mail (SMTP) is set to mail.utexas.edu
- Incoming Mail Server
- Account Name is your basic e-mail address (umbs-username@mail.utexas.edu).
- Password field is your basic e-mail password.
- Server Information
- Under Outgoing Mail Server, make sure that My server requires authentication is checked.
- Click Settings.
- Make sure that Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected.
Caution: For basic e-mail do not use the Log on using option because your password could get out of sync and that would prevent you from sending e-mail. - Click OK.
- Select the Advanced tab.
- At Outgoing mail, select This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
- Enter "25" in the Port field.
NOTE: If SBC or another Internet Service Provider (ISP) won't let you send mail to a remote server using port 25, enter "587" in the Port field.
- At Incoming mail select This server requires a secure connection (SSL). The port number will change, which is okay.
- Click OK.
- Click Close.
- Close Outlook and restart it for the changes to take effect.
NOTE: Send a test e-mail from another account to your basic e-mail account to make sure everything works.
