Install and Configure Norton Personal Firewall: Macintosh OS 8.6 - 9.x

NOTE: Before you install Norton AntiVirus software, make sure that you disable or uninstall all other anti-virus and firewall applications that may interfere with the installation process.

  • If you have already installed Norton AntiVirus, you must disable it before installing Norton Firewall.
  • If you decide to uninstall Norton AntiVirus at any point, make sure you uninstall Norton Firewall first.

Task 1– Install and update Norton Firewall

IMPORTANT! If you want to update your software or schedule auto-updates, this application requires Internet connectivity. If you begin installation when you are not connected, the program may attempt to make a connection to complete the installation process.

For this product to install correctly, you need to uninstall or disable any existing anti-virus applications and restart your machine. You should also remove any other firewall applications from your system.

Installing from the BevoWare download site

If you downloaded the installer from the BevoWare site, make sure that you have StuffIt Expander installed (also available on the BevoWare download site).

  1. Go to the BevoWare download site and select the appropriate version of Norton AntiVirus.
  2. Click Install to begin installation.
  3. Click Continue.
  4. Read the terms of the license agreement, and if you agree, click Accept.
  5. Read the text in the Read Me screen, then click Continue.
  6. Select Easy Install from the drop-down menu.
  7. Click Install to use the default directory for installation. Or, click the Install Location drop-down menu to select a different folder for installation, then click Install.
  8. If you have more than one disk drive or volume, you must confirm that the proper drive is selected. Click Switch Disk to cycle through your drives, then click Continue.
  9. Click Quit when installation is complete. The firewall is now active and configured with default settings.

Task 2 – Configure Norton Personal Firewall

If you use specific services that require Internet or network access on a regular basis, you may want to adjust access settings for these services or machines by following the steps below.

To customize your firewall service settings:

  1. Open the Norton Personal Firewall folder on your hard drive.
  2. Double-click the Norton Personal Firewall program icon.
  3. If AppleTalk is active, click OK when the warning screen appears.
  4. On the menu bar, click Edit, then click Preferences.
  5. Select the Enable more control over services checkbox, then click Save.
  6. Scroll through the Protect these Internet services box and click on the service you want to edit.
    • If you don't see the service listed, click New and then click the Service port drop-down menu to view available services. If necessary, edit the name for this service, then click OK.
  7. By default, all services are set to Deny all access. You can allow or deny access by a single IP address, range of IP addresses, or by a domain name. To do so, click on one of the options:
    • Allow all. Allows any system to access this service.
    • Allow these addresses. Limits access to specific systems or networks. If you select this option, click New to specify an address, address range, or subnet.
    • Deny these addresses. Allows most systems, but denies access to specific IP addresses. Again, click New to specify an address, address range, or subnet.
    • Deny all access. (Default option) Denies access to all systems.
