Install and Configure Norton AntiVirus Software: Mac OS 8.6-9.x

NOTE: Before you install Norton AntiVirus software, make sure that you disable or uninstall all other anti-virus and firewall applications that may interfere with the installation process. The Uninstall Virex utility is included in the BevoWare Web download.

  • If you have already installed Norton Firewall, you must disable it before installing Norton AntiVirus.
  • If you decide to uninstall Norton AntiVirus at any point, make sure you uninstall Norton Firewall first.

Task 1– Install and Update Norton AntiVirus

IMPORTANT! This procedure may require Internet connectivity to install correctly. Some of the applications may attempt to make a connection to complete the installation process.

Note: During the Norton AntiVirus installation process, Virex 6 and 7 files will be found and deleted.

To install Norton AntiVirus from the BevoWare download site:

  1. Go to the BevoWare download site and select the appropriate version of Norton AntiVirus.
  2. Click Install to begin installation.
  3. Click Continue.
  4. Read the terms of the license agreement, and if you agree, click Accept.
  5. Read the text in the Read Me screen, then click Continue.
  6. Make sure Easy Install is selected in the drop-down menu at the top left.
  7. Click Install if you want to use the default directory for installation. Or, click the Install Location drop-down menu to select a different folder for installation, then click Install.
  8. If you have more than one disk drive or volume, you must confirm that the proper drive is selected. Click Switch Disk to cycle through your drives if necessary. Then, click Continue.
  9. Click OK when installation is complete. Ignore the one year subscription notice.
  10. ITS recommends you use the default settings. If you would like to create your own settings,, select a different Protection level and specify how compressed files should be scanned.
  11. Click Set Preferences and Continue.
    • At any point, you can adjust preferences from within the application. Click Preferences and click on General Preferences.
  12. Restart your machine when prompted.
  13. Open your Norton AntiVirus folder and double-click the Norton AntiVirus icon.
  14. Click LiveUpdate.
    • You can run LiveUpdate at any time from within the application by clicking LiveUpdate.
  15. Click Update Everything Now. The virus definitions are about 1 MB, and may take about four minutes to download on a 56K modem.
  16. Restart your machine again.

Task 2– Scan your drives

After installation, you should scan all of your drives for existing viruses. Make sure you have updated your computer to include the latest virus definition files before beginning this. You may also want to consider updating Stuffit Expander, as well as updating to Mac OS 9.2.2 if you are having problems with 9.2.1.

To scan your drive for viruses:

  1. Open your Norton AntiVirus folder and double-click the Norton AntiVirus icon.
  2. Click on the icon for your hard drive. (Shift-click to select multiple drives.)
  3. Click Scan/Repair to scan the selected drives.
  4. If any alerts appear, click Repair to have the software fix the problematic file.
  5. When the scan is complete, click Done.

Task 3– Schedule daily updates of virus definition files

To schedule daily updates of virus definition files:

  1. Open the LiveUpdate folder and double-click the LiveUpdate icon. Or, if Norton AntiVirus is open, click the LiveUpdate icon.
  2. Click Schedule Future Updates.
  3. Enter a name for this event such as "Daily Definitions Update," and then click OK.
  4. On the Event Type drop-down menu, select Update Virus Definitions.
    • Update all will update all Norton products, including LiveUpdate, Norton AntiVirus, and Norton Personal Firewall.
  5. On the How Often drop-down menu, select daily. ITS recommends that you include everything in the scheduled update, so that applications can be updated, too.
  6. Select today's date from the calendar, or enter a date into the Starting field. Click Done.

Task 4– Schedule weekly system scanning

If you have Auto-Protect turned on, your system will be protected most of the time. However, ITS recommends that you configure weekly scans for your system.

To schedule weekly system scanning with Norton AntiVirus:

  1. Open your Norton AntiVirus folder and double-click the Norton AntiVirus icon.
  2. Click Tools, then click Scheduler.
  3. Click New.
  4. At Enter a name for this event, enter "Weekly System Scan," then click OK.
  5. On the Event Type drop-down menu, select scan all local disks.
  6. On the When To Do drop-down menu, select your preferred option.
    • If you select scan at startup, only the drive that boots your system will be scanned.
  7. On the How Often drop-down menu, select weekly.
  8. Select the starting day on the calendar, or enter a date into the Starting field. Click Done.
