Install and Configure Norton AntiVirus Software: Mac OS X

This document describes how to install and configure the Norton AntiVirus (NAV) software for Mac OS X. The Norton AntiVirus software helps protect your computer from malicious attacks, so it is extremely important to install and update this software regularly.

IMPORTANT: If you are using OS X 10.4 (Tiger), you should install NAV 10. If you are using OS X 10.3.9 or earlier, install NAV 9.

Before You Begin

To use Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh, you need the following:

  • A machine running Macintosh OS X 10.1.5 or higher
  • The Norton AntiVirus installer from the BevoWare download site
  • 40 MB of available hard disk space, 128 MB of RAM
  • An active Internet connection (if you plan to use the product's auto-update function)

Before you install Norton AntiVirus:

  • Close all programs on your machine, so that you won't lose work when you restart the machine during this installation.
  • Log in with a user name and password for an account with administrative privileges.
  • Disable or uninstall all other anti-virus and firewall applications that may interfere with the installation process. If you currently have Virex 6 or 7 on your system, you should download the Uninstall Virex 7.x application from the BevoWare download site and run it before installing Norton AntiVirus. If you have already installed Norton Firewall, you must disable it before installing Norton AntiVirus.
