Install and Configure Norton Personal Firewall: Mac OS X 10.0 - 10.3
This document describes how to install and configure the Norton Personal Firewall for Mac OS X 10.0 through Mac OS X 10.3. The Norton Personal Firewall helps protect your computer from malicious attacks, so it is extremely important to install and update this software regularly.
IMPORTANT: Norton Personal Firewall works ONLY for OS X 10.0 through OS X 10.3 (Panther). If you have OS X 10.4 (Tiger), Norton Personal Firewall will not work.
Before You Begin
To use Norton Personal Firewall for Macintosh, you need the following:
- A machine running Macintosh OS X 10.0 through OS X 10.3. Note that OS X 10.4 WILL NOT work with Norton Personal Firewall.
- The Norton Personal Firewall installer from the BevoWare download site
- 25 MB of available hard disk space, 128 MB of RAM
- An active Internet connection (if you plan to use the product's auto-update function)
Before you install Norton Personal Firewall:
- Close all programs on your machine, so you won't lose work when you restart the machine during this installation.
- Log in with a user name and password for an account on your system with administrative privileges.
- Uninstall any other firewall applications. If you have already installed Norton AntiVirus, you must disable it before installing Norton Personal Firewall.
Installing Norton Personal Firewall
IMPORTANT! Norton Personal Firewall works ONLY for OS X 10.0 through OS X 10.3 (Panther). If you have OS X 10.4 (Tiger), Norton Personal Firewall will not work.
To install Norton Personal Firewall from the BevoWare download site:
- Make sure that you have StuffIt Expander installed (available on the BevoWare download site).
- Go to the BevoWare download site and download the Norton Personal Firewall application.
- Double-click the installer icon, and follow the instructions to unzip the files. Once the files have been unzipped, follow the instructions in the installation wizard to complete installation.
- Reboot your machine when installation is complete.
OS X 10.2 USERS: If you did not choose to run LiveUpdate when installing Norton AntiVirus or Norton Personal Firewall, you may see this error message when you reboot:
The program you are using needs to use a system file that may reduce the security of your computer.
Click DON'T USE when prompted to fix the problem. Then, run LiveUpdate to update both Norton AntiVirus and Norton Personal Firewall. This will eliminate the error message.
Configuring Norton Personal Firewall
- Open Norton Personal Firewall in your Applications folder.
- Click Continue at the Welcome screen.
- In the Access Settings window, select the Tell me when my computer’s setting conflict with my firewall settings option.
- In the Protection Settings window, slide the arrow to Medium Protection.
- Click Continue, then click Done.
- In the Setup window, select the Enable Norton Personal Firewall option.
- If you use specific services that require Internet or network access on a regular basis, you may want to adjust access settings for these services or machines. To do so, click the arrow button next to Service Settings and follow the steps below to adjust access settings for a specific service.
Adjusting Access Settings for a Specific Service
- On the menu bar, click Tools, then click Setup.
- If you don't see a list of services, click the arrow button next to Service Settings.
- In the Setup window, scroll through the Protect these Internet services box and click the service you want to edit.
- If you don't see the service listed, click New and then select the new service in the Name drop-down menu. Then, you can adjust ports for that specific service. Adjust logging and notification options, then click Save.
- Select the Incoming tab to configure access for systems that will create an incoming connection to the selected service. Alternatively, select the Outgoing tab to configure access for outgoing requests related to the selected service.
- Click the Allow these addresses drop-down menu in the right side of the window, then select one of the following options. By default, all services are set to Deny all. You can allow or deny access by a single IP address, range of IP addresses, or by a domain name.
- Allow all. Allows any system to access this service.
- Allow these addresses. Limits access to specific systems or networks. If you select this option, click New to specify an address, address range, or network.
- Deny these addresses. Allows most systems, but denies access to specific IP addresses. Again, click New to specify an address, address range, or network.
- Deny all. (Default option) Denies access to all system.
Customizing Your Firewall Protection Level Settings
If you prefer, you can customize your firewall protection level settings.
- On the menu bar, click Tools, then click Setup.
- In the Setup window, click the Protection Settings icon in the upper left corner.
- For Easy Setup, click and drag the blue arrow left or right to change the protection level.
- To customize your setup, click Custom Setup. Then, select the checkboxes to enable or disable specific options.
Adjusting Ports for a Specific Service
Each service runs on a port, a software socket that is associated with a specific service. When a service runs, it listens for connection requests. By default, all services are set up with common port settings. You can't change the default ports for services set up by Norton Personal Firewall. However, you can change the port for any service when you add it.
- On the menu bar, click Tools, then click Setup.
- If you don't see a list of services, click the arrow button next to Service Settings.
- In the Setup window, scroll through the Protect these Internet services box and click the service you want to edit. (Remember, you cannot change ports for default services.)
- Click Edit below the list of services.
- Click on the port number.
- Click Edit.
- Change the port number or range, then click Save.
