Install and Configure Symantec Client Security: Windows

This document describes how to install and configure the Symantec Client Security package, which contains both Symantec AntiVirus and Symantec Client Firewall. The Symantec Client Security package helps protect your computer from malicious attacks, so it is extremely important to install and update this software regularly.

Note: If you do not want to install the firewall, you can just install Symantec AntiVirus. Refer to Installing and Configuring Symantec AntiVirus Software: Windows for instructions on downloading and installing the anti-virus only package.

Before You Begin

To use Symantec Client Security for Windows, you need:

  • A machine running Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, or XP.
Note: If you are using Windows XP, the built-in Windows XP security package can be used in addition to the Symantec Client Security package.
  • Access to the BevoWare download site.
  • 80 MB of available hard drive space
Note: This figure includes space used for temporary Windows files; the actual application may require less space.
  • An active Internet connection (if you plan to use the product's LiveUpdate function).

Before you install Symantec Client Security software:

  • Close all programs on your machine, so you won't lose work when you restart the machine during this installation.
  • Uninstall any other anti-virus and firewall applications (unless you are using Windows XP).
  • (Windows NT/2000/XP) Log in as Administrator, or as a user with with administrative account privileges. If you have questions, contact your network administrator or call the ITS Help Desk at 475-9400.

Installing Symantec Client Security for Windows

To install Symantec Client Security for Windows from the BevoWare download site:

  1. Make sure that you have StuffIt Expander installed (available on the BevoWare download site).
  2. Go to the BevoWare download site and download the Symantec Client Security application.
  3. Double-click on the installer icon, and follow the instructions to unzip the files. Once the files have been unzipped, follow the instructions in the installation wizard to complete installation.
  4. Reboot your machine when installation is complete.

Automatically Scanning and Configuring Applications With Symantec Client Firewall

To automatically configure applications:

  1. Double-click the Symantec Client Firewall icon in the Windows taskbar.
  2. Select Client Firewall, then click the Configure button.
  3. Under the Programs tab, check Turn on Automatic Program Control.

Configuring Symantec AntiVirus

After you install the software and restart your computer, you should make sure that certain settings are in place for Symantec AntiVirus. Your anti-virus software should be configured to run LiveUpdate on a daily basis to ensure that it is always working with the very latest virus definition files. Weekly system scans should be scheduled as well. For instructions on how to perform these tasks, see Install and Configure Symantec AntiVirus Software: Windows.

Refining firewall rules as you work

If you have followed the steps listed above, you have provided good, basic protection for your system. The firewall automatically loads each time your system boots up, unless you have deactivated that option. As you work on your system, the firewall runs in the background and monitors Internet and network access attempts by applications and outside systems.

From now on, whenever an application tries to access the Internet or network for the first time, or if an outside application or system tries to access your system, Symantec will notify you by displaying a dialog box. When this occurs, choose Permit, Block or Customize access for this site, system, or application and then click OK. If you want the Symantec to remember this action, select the Always use this action for this application checkbox.

If you selected Enable Automatic Internet Access Control when you configured Symantec AntiVirus, a fourth option sometimes appears: Automatically configure Internet access. When you select this option, you instruct Symantec Client Security to make a decision about this program and in some cases, create rules behind the scenes. If a program is considered safe, Symantec will create a permanent "allow" rule for the application; if it is not a well-known, recognized program, Symantec may create a permanent "block" rule instead.

You can remove or modify any setting for a particular program on your machine using the instructions below. You can also create new rules, modify rules that you have set up, or modify rules that were automatically set up. To manually change or add a rule:

  1. Double-click the Symantec Client Firewall icon in the Windows taskbar.
  2. Select Client Firewall, then click the Configure button.
  3. On the Advanced tab, click General.
  4. Select an action to perform:
    • To remove an existing entry, click Remove.
    • To change an existing entry, click Modify. Several tabbed pages of information appear. Select the name of the tab to edit, and change the settings as necessary. Click OK when you are finished editing that entry.
    • To add a new entry, click Add. Follow the instructions in the wizard to configure the new rule.
    • Rules that appear at the top of the list override rules that occur lower in the list, so you may have to use the Move Up and Move Down buttons to prioritize your rules.
  5. Click OK when you are finished.
