Custom Web Publishing

SSL Certificate

A Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate is an optional feature that can be ordered as part of custom Web publishing. An SSL certificate enables encryption of sensitive information during online transactions. You need one if you:

  • Offer a login or sign in on your site
  • Process sensitive data such as address, birth date, license, or ID numbers
  • Have an online store or accept online orders and credit cards
  • Need to comply with privacy and security requirements

You should contact the Information Security Office if you are storing any sensitive data or are processing credit card information.

Obtaining an SSL certificate

SSL certificates can be purchased for both utexas domains and for custom domains. The price of the certificate varies based on your domain.

Utexas domains

For utexas.edu, utexas.org, utexas.net, and custom domains registered with the UT System Managed PKI program at VeriSign, the cost of an SSL certificate is $150 per year.

For domains to be registered under the UT System Managed PKI program, organizations must do one of the following:

  • When purchasing a domain, register the domain with “The University of Texas at Austin” as the registering organization.
  • Update existing domain information with the Registrar to change the registering organization to “The University of Texas at Austin.”
  • Complete a domain authorization form, printed on the organization’s letterhead, and fax the form to VeriSign to confirm that the organization is part of the UT System program. This form will be created when a request is submitted for a domain that is not already registered with the UT System Managed PKI program.

Non-Utexas Domains

For custom domains that are not associated with the university in the Registrar information, the cost of an SSL certificate is $400 per year. ITS orders these certificates directly though VeriSign for Virtual Hosts so that all certificates are from the same company and ITS can manage renewals easily.

Non-ITS Hosted Domains

If you are a system administrator on campus and you run your own server, you should contact the UT System Managed PKI administrator at UT System (sslcerts@utsystem.edu) to obtain an SSL certificate.
