Migrating From Symantec Anti-Virus to ClamXav Using Apple Remote Desktop 3.2
Note: This topic is intended for system administrators managing the migration of Mac OS X computers from Symantec to ClamXav using Apple Remote Desktop (ARD). Individuals who manage their own computers should refer to Uninstalling Symantec and Installing ClamXav: Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5.
The packages used for this procedure are not specific to ARD. Any system configuration utility that can deploy Apple Installer Packages can be used. These instructions, however, will describe the process using Apple Remote Desktop 3.2.2.
Download the UT Symantec Remover and UT ClamXav for Systems Administrators installer packages. Mount the disk image files and drag-and-drop the installer packages to your Desktop.
Launch the Remote Desktop console and select the computers that you wish to migrate from Symantec to ClamXav.
From the Manage menu select Install Packages (or click the Install icon on the toolbar). Add the packages to the Packages list by either dragging them into the list or clicking the + button and locating the package. Make sure to add them in the following order:
UT Symantec Remover
UT ClamXav for System Administrators
Make sure the Attempt restart, allow users to save documents radio button is selected.
When all computers are available, click the Install button at the bottom of the window to begin the installation process. If some of the computers are offline and you want the installation to take place automatically when they come back online, you will need to run this install task from a Task Server.
The packages will be copied to the computers and then installed in the order specified in the Install Packages window. NOTE: The ClamXav install package is 26 MB. Ensure that you have adequate upstream bandwidth and a stable connection if you are deploying to many computers.
If there is a problem during the installation or you want more detailed feedback on the installation progress, you can send the following command as an admin user to one or more computers. From the Manage menu, select Send UNIX Command and enter the following:
tail /var/log/install.logAfter installation completes, the computers will restart. When the computers come back online, verify the removal of the Symantec products. From the Interact menu, select Spotlight Search to open a remote Spotlight search window. In the search field in the toolbar of that new window, search for "Symantec" and you should see few, if any files returned.
Verify that the ClamXav launchd tasks are running by sending the following UNIX command as the root user and displaying all output:
launchctl list | grep ClamXav
The edu.utexas.ClamXav.clamdLauncher service should be listed for each computer. When a user is logged in, you can verify the other launchd tasks (edu.utexas.ClamXav.ScanLauncher, edu.utexas.ClamXav.SentryLauncher, and edu.utexas.ClamXav.UpdateLauncher) by sending the same command but by running it as the current console user on the target computer instead.
