Operating System: Windows Vista and 7
If you are a faculty or staff member and your computer is supported by technical support staff, please contact your support staff prior to performing this procedure.
Uninstall old anti-virus software
Having more than one anti-virus software program installed on your computer can cause serious problems in the operating system. If you are removing Symantec that you downloaded from BevoWare, you can find uninstall instructions here. Otherwise please consult the website for your anti-virus software provider for instructions on removing your old software.
Data backup (Optional)
Back up your system and/or any important content stored on your system prior to performing this procedure. UT Backup is a backup service available to departmental employees at the University of Texas Austin.
Note: The uninstallation process can cause a loss of data. Please be sure to back up your files appropriately.
This procedure ensures that your computer is set up to find any updates for Forefront.
From the Start menu, select All Programs, then select Windows Update.
For the setting You receive updates, there are two options:
If it says "For Windows and other products from Microsoft Update," you are already set up to use Microsoft Update. Move onto the steps to uninstall Symantec.
If it says "For Windows only, click the "Get updates for more products" option and continue with step 4.
Windows Update checks for updates. Close the screen. Forefront will look for updates when it is installed.
