Activating Your BlackBerry
After you have subscribed to Austin BlackBerry Services, a password that is used to complete the activation process will appear in the Austin Exchange Messaging Service (AEMS) account management window and will also be sent to your AEMS email address. The password should appear within 90 seconds. You must activate your device within 48 hours.
To activate your device:
If your BlackBerry is connected to your computer, disconnect it.
Turn your BlackBerry on (if your device is brand new, you may need to plug it in).
Locate the Turn Wireless On/Off icon. It should look like a tower with radio signals coming from it. If not, click the icon. It should now read Turn Wireless Off, indicating that your wireless is now on. You should also have several bars of wireless service in the top right section of the screen.
Select the Enterprise Activation icon using one of the following methods:
If your BlackBerry is brand new, scroll to the Enterprise Activation icon and select it. You should see a screen with a place to type in your email address and password.
Note: The PIN number shown on your BlackBerry screen is not entered for enterprise activation.
If you are using BlackBerry Device Software version earlier than 4.1, go to the Options icon and select it. Select the Enterprise Activation option.
If you are using BlackBerry Device Software version 4.1 or newer, go to the Options icon and select it. Select Advanced Options, and then select the Enterprise Activation option.
Enter the password (either from the email or from the AEMS account management window) and your AEMS email address into the Enterprise Activation screen. Note that the password is in upper and lower case, and also contains numbers.
To type an upper case letter, use the Shift key (just to the right or left of the SPACE bar) then type the letter.
To type a number, use the Alt key (just under the A key, it has a gray half-moon on it) then type the number.
Note: For more information about using your BlackBerry, refer to the BlackBerry Wireless Handheld Getting Started Guide that came with your BlackBerry.
If there is a field to enter a server address, such as Server Activation Address, enter "bes02.austin.utexas.edu". Note that not all activation processes require this field.
After you have entered your email address and password, click once to open the menu, then select Activate from the pop-up menu.
Over-the-air activation will begin. This may take up to half an hour, depending on how much data is being transferred. Your screen should show the following messages as activation occurs:
Activating... Verifying encryption... Encryption verified. Waiting for services... Services received. Your email address, "_user_@austin.utexas.edu" is now enabled. Synchronizing service desktop...The top of your BlackBerry screen will indicate what percentage of the activation process is complete.
Once activation is complete, your BlackBerry will show the message:
Activation complete.
If you check your messages, you will find several new emails from BlackBerry, including tips on how to use your new BlackBerry.
