EID Authentication Offerings

There are a number of options for allowing your system to authenticate using the central identity record, the UT EID. Please evaluate the available options to find the solution which is appropriate for your needs and environment.

  UT Login Central Web Authentication (CWA)/Fat Cookie (FC) uTexas Enterprise Directory (TED) Shibboleth
Description UTLogin is the university’s new centralized EID authentication service that provides secure single sign on for university web applications. The Central Web Authentication / Fat Cookie service is the university’s legacy EID single sign-on service. CWA/FC is scheduled for retirement in June 2014 and will be replaced by UTLogin. The uTexas Enterprise Directory (TED) is a private directory service that contains identity information about university constituents. Shibboleth uses SAML to provide EID-based authentication for federated Service Providers.

Technologies & Interfaces Uses OpenAM web policy agents installed on web/application servers. Future releases will support SAML2, REST, and OAuth2 interfaces, as well as second factor authentication options. N/A Supports LDAP interface. Supports SAML2 interface.
When to Use Primary authentication service for web applications hosted on-premise. Should be used whenever possible. Deprecated. Will be replaced by UTLogin. For applications that cannot work with UTLogin or require an LDAP interface for authentication. For cloud-based applications hosted off-site.

Disaster Recovery Capability (in the event of a loss of primary UT datacenter) Service can be restored at secondary UT datacenter within two (2) hours of an outage. Service can be restored once mainframe and UT Direct service is restored. Service can be restored at secondary UT datacenter within two (2) hours of an outage. Service can be restored at secondary UT datacenter within twenty-four (24) hours of an outage.
