Installing the SecureDoc Client on Windows PCs

Before SecureDoc installation, make sure you are aware of the following:

  • Performing a full data backup prior to installing any disk encryption utility is strongly recommended.

  • Any existing data encryption must first be removed.

  • Follow recommended pre-installation procedures.

    Note: Make sure that IDE ATA/ATAPI drivers are the most current version available.

  • The computer must be connected to a university network OR have an active Internet connection during the SecureDoc installation process in order for it to complete successfully.

Download the installation files

  1. Open the Enterprise Whole Disk Encryption share on Austin Disk located at: file://///austin.utexas.edu/disk/ewde or "https://webdav.austin.utexas.edu/ewde"

  2. Download your department-specific configuration files. If a permission denied error occurs please contact the ITS Help and Service Desk at 512-475-9400 to arrange SecureDoc access.

  3. The executables and department-specific configuration files are located in their respective EWDE department folders on Austin Disk. The installation requires these five files:

    • Boot_msg.txt
    • PackageSettings.ini
    • SDConnex.cer
    • SDProfile.spf
    • Plus one of the installers:

      • For x86 systems, select file SecureDoc_32.exe OR
      • For x64 systems, select file SecureDoc_64.exe

      Note: Make sure that ALL five files from Austin Desk are saved to the same destination folder. These files may be retained for later use on additional computers.

  4. For mass deployments, use the *.msi files (located at "\\austin.utexas.edu\disk\ewde\! SecureDoc v5.3 SR2 MSI files" or "https://webdav.austin.utexas.edu/ewde/! SecureDoc v5.3 SR2 MSI files)."

Run the installer

Note: We strongly recommend against running an installer under generic named accounts such as "Administrator", "Admin," or "User." Running the installer through a personal account will minimize user name collisions that result in client device misplacement within the SecureDoc console.

  1. Run the installer file.

    Note: On Windows systems with User Account Control enabled — the default on Vista and Windows 7 — you must right-click the installer and select Run as administrator, even if you are logged on with an account that has administrative privileges.

  2. The client installer will run silently and once finished, whole disk encryption will automatically begin. During encryption the computer may be shut down or restarted without harming the process. It will resume automatically from the last disk sector encrypted. Encryption may take several hours to complete depending on hard drive size, CPU speed, and available memory.

    Progress will be indicated as shown below. Laptops equipped with self-encrypting drives do NOT show encryption progress since conversion only takes a few seconds.

    Note: To maximize disk conversion efficiency, temporarily disable sleep or hibernation modes. Computers entering sleep or hibernation will resume the encryption process when woken.

  3. Restart the computer once encryption is complete.

  4. Verify disk encryption by checking that the SecureDoc system tray icon appears. The icon looks like a closed green lock on a yellow background. Hovering the mouse cursor over this icon confirms protection status.

    • If unencrypted media is inserted (e.g. a USB flash drive) the SecureDoc icon will change to an open green lock with a red and yellow background.

    • When no disks are encrypted the SecureDoc tray icon will be an open green lock on a red background.
